Good luck with it.

No luck needed. This will be about my 20th Abelo poly hive. Bees love 'em.
No doubt you will be referring to your one and only purchase of a Lyson langstroth where you seemed to have bad luck and since then have branded everything in the same boat.
Lyson sell around 500,000 hives per year worldwide made of the same density of material. Seems you where a tadge unfortunate to get the only one, in god knows how many years, that the bees didn't like.

Yep.

But the point is it did happen.

Might I suggest you try a few more? You will (I can assure you) be pleasantly surprised to find you must have had a one off.
Do you really think Lyson would sell over 500,000 hives every year made of the same material if the bees didn't like the poly it was made from?
Or do you think your sole individual atypical experience of one single hive defines all Lyson hives?

Good luck with it.

I never had any success with them though the material may be different now, I thought it was too dense.

Only had the Abelo boxes two years and i can not fault them in any way... the roof's are to die for as are the feeders... come to think of it i have a long list of positives..i may have lied however as one in 20 bits off equipment boxes/roofs do need touching up with blistered paint ..but dear lord i can live with that..that might explain why i still keep spending lots of money on Abelo Beekeeping equipment..even the frames and foundation are perfect..

Snap, less than 24 hours door to door.....Not bad service.
I like them in green ;)

If you move to dadant or langstroth i will take that from your hands..;)

Now why would a poly enthusiast want to go skepping?

For swarms dear all for swarms, and before you get ideas not mine.

Skeps are so versatile... and easy to carry up a ladder to dump a swarm into... then bring it down and allow the rest of the bees to go into... and there was me thinking PH was moving into alternative beekeeping..... whatever next.. a Sun Hive!!

Yeghes da

Brittle as chuff. I use their poly roofs and they give the bees all the insulation they need but I've just called by the apiary to find the top corner of one roof knocked off. There was a pyramid shaped chunk about three inches in size on the floor by the hive, it's very crumbly inside and it's going to require a fair amount of filler after I glue this piece back on.
No idea what was responsible for causing the damage. A few years ago, a box profile sheet blew over and landed on a paynes nuc and apart from a dent and a bit of a split from the impact, the damage was minimal.
I dread to think what damage could be done to an abelo hive by stone throwers, they'd probably shatter.

It's about time someone put an end to this myth about Abelo/Lyson hives being crumbly etc. I get fed up with people who don't even use the hives talking utter rubbish and nonsense. Shatter if stones thrown at them, what bullocks.
Having dropped a variety of Abelo/Lyson, Paynes and Swienty supers over the years I can tell you they all do the same thing....they crack and break apart. Both are easily fixed, as shown in the picture below where you can see the repairs I've made to both a Paynes and an Abelo super. Now I have several repaired supers and one repaired brood box from both manufacturers. Non have ever shattered when dropped....and no you can't come and throw stones at my hives.....go out and buy your own to throw stones at. What claptrap.

What a gem! You have a hard job believing others don't you? Shall I go back and take a photo?

The piece I was holding today was crumbly inside. The big, white area it came from is the same. This is the thickest part of the roof. The chunk will glue back in place but there's a fair amount of holes and crevices where the edges crumbled that will require filler. Do you think I'm crowing about it? I'm bloody annoyed.

Us humans are an odd lot really.

It all comes down to our experience of life I find.

When something nasty happens like say food poisoning are you interested in the other 50000 sarnies sold by that company that day? Nope the one that concerns you is the one that has you on the loo in hellish discomfort.

That's how it works. And you know something else? That's the one that you will talk about.

Looks like they have glued back together okay, what caused those two to shatter.

Dropped whilst full of honey. It happens to me about once a season....usually a lose hive strap trips me up......
Guerrilla glue and long Window screws or nails used to strengthen the weakened joints. They usually break into two parts regardless of manufacturer.

Done that a few times carrying nuc's full of bees..luckily i did not hit the deck and drop them..i now make sure the ratchet strap loose end is well tied up as the panic involved is unbelievable especially with no be suit on..it certainly tests the ticker out..:spy:

Are you on their payroll or something? Take a look later when I post a pic.

I have a roof with a chip out of it, my own fault as if fell onto a solid concrete floor from quite a height.
I'll show you mine if you show me yours.....
