Yup, can you believe it, AFB in jersey, the first outbreak in living memory.
The inspectors (3 from the UK) have just about finished, the stats are 460 hives tested, 74 had to be destroyed, this is after 40% losses over winter so not good. These inspectors are back in six weeks to check over every hive again so probably more will have to be delt with.

I have seen beekeepers in tears, some have lost all their colonies after countless years of beekeeping, very very sad to see.

Makes you wonder if these beeks were working in total isolation, never reading any current literature or knowing what healthy brood looks like. You ought to know there is a problem before the bee inspector arrives.

There are rumours there are thousands of beeks like this across the UK that aren't on the radar at all, maybe varroa was a big help and it continues to wipe out those that don't/won't treat, unfortunately if they continue to use old equipment without scorching the possibilities of reinfection by AFB for swarms attracted to bait hives remains high.
