I've just seen on the Abelo website oxalic acid strips "for sterilising and improving the condition of the hive". Can any one explain what this means?

Much the same as bog standard oxalic crystals are used to clean your timber in the hive rather than treat varroa, they are not claiming it as a varroa treatment therefore it does not need registration even if killing the varroa is a side affect.

Would guess it’s a variation/update on the oxalic loaded towel that was around a couple of years ago inc you tube videos. Could be interesting!!

Ordered some, will be interesting to see if they're any better than normal cardboard

So, I guess the same goes for vaping with generic OA when sterilising and cleaning the timber inside of the hive.

Does it clean poly just as well?

Correct!! As to poly well nothing says your cleaning needs to be effective

Here in New Zealand beekeepers are using a absorbant paper strip 5 layers thick and sewn together. The paper is the type they use in taping ceiling plaster boards together to hide the joins. Soaked in the oxalic and glyserine mix and introduced into the hives. They have had good results from this treatment.

Easy enough to get joint tape here got a link for the tape being used so we could compare plus mix used to bleach the wood;)

It will be interesting to see how many hives the 20 strips will clean - the Abelo site does not say.

Thank goodness nobody from the NBU reads this forum or Abelo might be getting their collar felt!

I'd be assuming 4 strips per brood box to give an adequate clean
