Obviously they can't be spun, but they are easily strong enough to inspect.

Not so sure about that. Doubt if they would stand radial forces, but there are not many radial extractors around for that size frame. Tangentially, the frames are sitting on the support screens, along with most of the comb, so it should not be a problem with hardened comb ... as long as they are not driven into the mesh of the screen. Unwired foundation does need fixing securely to the top bar, I have found, or it may pull out before the bees fix it.

Thanks everyone for all your replies, even the off topic ones :)

The reason I asked the question was because I know top bar hives function perfectly well without foundation or wires, and wondered if you could do the same in a large brood box.

Interesting to hear that one or two of you have tried it with no major disasters. Also interesting to hear the warnings as I myself am dubious. Obviously such large and unsupported comb would need careful handling.

hmmm..... the ponderings will continue

For the cost of foundation, wire and eyelets why take the risk. One dropped comb would pay the cost of waxing and wiring the whole box.

Experimental is good, sometimes, being foolish is hard on the bees, who have no choice.
