    Two questions!!

Anyone else finding a honey crop this year not happening? Spring crop this year didn't happen at all. Had to start feeding a few smaller colonies last week as starvation was taking place. Now all bramble is out I have stopped feeding but have a feeling I won't be getting any even from the larger...

    Extractor question please

Sold my old extractor and now looking for a new one. Seems as though I have to be careful which ones take Langstroth frames. Is this correct? Some on the well known selling website are for frames 16cm x 40 and Langstroth are 48cm so just a bit confused now. Also seen this one...

Does anyone else get into a mess?

Went into a hive today and they had built comb everywhere. Needed to get in brood boxes to check and they had brood in where it should be and honey all round top, crossing through into next frames all along the bottom brood box. Terrible when you have comb dropping off and honey oozing...

Two caught swarms in one day!!

....and they aren't mine for a change :-) Both arrived in nucs i put out in two different locations but they never went for the full size empty hives. Watched one arrive this afternoon but loads of fighting which I have seen before and some bees arriving full of pollen so I assume it is an...

    Condensation in poly hives?

First season using Poly hives but I've noticed high condensation. Is this something that poly hives are known for? Build up is much quicker than my wooden hives so cant be all bad. I have noticed water at front entrance a few times as running down inside although that seems to have stopped now...

Transferring from top bar to Langstroth

I have made a few changes as going for Poly Langs and Top bar hives. My new top bars fit the langstroth T. bars so can work with the two if need be. Got rid of all my Nationals as didn't want to complicate it any further. Question is: My homemade top bar hive bars didn't fit either of the new...

Found a new out apiary site but bit of advice please

This site is on the edge of my village and best best site so far. Only one worry is possible vandalism and what measures I can do to prevent it. The site isn't secure like my allotment sites but I don't have to worry about other allotment holders which is always on my mind. So trying to weigh...

    Bees drinking water

Every place where there is water my bees are drinking. From plant pots, huge pond, bird feeders, garden taps and even in the boiler flue and outside tap. Why so much water being drunk? and why so many taking it? Also whats the fascination with privet hedges? Buzzing around my privet hedges and...

    Why are they doing this?

Ive noticed this many times but thought Id ask to find out what is going on. Bee's clustering in small groups ( two, threes, fours) on twigs or base of hive. They sit feeding each other then in the morning they are all dead where they stood. Yesterday for example saw lots of orientation flights...

    Re-queening

I had a call from a fellow allotment holder saying my bees were a bit stroppy the last few days and persistently buzzing after people. To be on the safe side I have decided to re-queen hives there and ones at home in the garden sooner rather than later. Queens I have are all home grown and I am...

Avon 'Skin so Soft' Does it work???

Just came home from work and the sun is out and pretty warm so thought Id quickly check a nuc that's been struggling Couldn't be bothered with the suit or lighting the smoker as I wanted to be in and out with in a few seconds. Multiple eggs in cells

Managed to inspect hives today as warm and sunny earlier...didn't last long!!. One hive with a 2013 (red) queen has laid multiple eggs in cells. There is BIAS on other frames... not much but some as its a very small colony. Had problems with my out apiary with flooding this year and my hives...

    TBH build

I have been in the process of building a TBH. I have been looking through the threads but cant find what I'm looking for so I'm positing to ask the question. How is the best way to make strips on the bars if I haven't got a router? I thought of doweling type moldings sold in B&Q the small...

    My swarm returned

The large, huge or medium possibly tiny swarm (not wanting to get myself in trouble) I lost last week returned today! Filling 6 frames in nuc. Will move them into a standard BB tomorrow...now I have some free equipment. Im happy anyway as it is my 2014 queen I purchased last year and the one...
