    Compose a talk?

I did one recently to an elderly group (so am I). Titled it "My experience of beekeeping". Took along a hive (no bees) and kept it simple. Then the questions come so be prepared. Went down well.

Wasp robbing -- except they're not.

Wasps did me a favour in one sense as frames also had wax moth. Hands up to very bad beekeeping. A few family health diversions as excuse.

Wasp robbing -- except they're not.

I came home from holiday to "swarm feeding" in my equipment shed. All my own fault, forgetting a couple of supers with stored old combs of honey. They had got dislodged and the wasps had found the half inch gap of course. The wasps were not in the least interested in me when I ventured in to...

    Porter bee escapes

This years method has worked a treat. Used porters and taped them to board leaving only the central hole and springs open for access. I had found they were not fitting tightly and bees were getting underneath the plastic rims and were able to go up and down. Selected honey super to clear. Placed...

    BBKA Book list

Soory to hear you failed, I failed Module 1 last year and was a bit surprised. I had used Haynes entirely for revision. I didn't ask for a breakdown as I resented paying the £30 requested. Felt a bit humbug too. Anyway I had no winter losses and the bees have flourished this year and I managed...

    Antihistimine Cream

Guy at local bee group swears by making a paste with a soluble aspirin and spreading that on immediately after sting removal. (Salicylic acid) The paste is a bit of spit I believe. Works well for him.

    Modified Snelgrove II

I've done two. Still can't find the b***** queen to return her so am leaving one qc on the original site in both cases. Q seems to have stayed put in the moved hive. We shall see what happens. I'm into my sixth summer and never known such a swarmy season. On the plus side, lots of capped honey...

Modified Snelgrove II- both halves queenless! Advice please!

I have also done a Wally Shaw Snelgrove 11 this year for the first time Timing was great as we were about to go away for a week. After 9 days took down three nice QC's in the AS as instructed. Went to find Q in the old box. HaHa! totally elusive. Have ended up putting a QC from another hive in...

    Yield off beans

I've had lovely caramelly honey from field beans. Regretfully this year it is wheat in the neighbouring field. Can look forward to OSR next year though.

Brood and a half - but which way up?

I'm with enrico. Have done brood and half for a couple of years, always with super under. Also found they don't tend to do much in the way of queen cups in that bottom box.

Blue powdery mildew on omf floor

Checking hives yesterday,(I have four overwintering), found one floor which is wooden covered in a powdery blue mildew. The other hives have plastic inserts and they were all OK. All hives alive so far, all with fondant on the crown board. Am I right to think this a ventilation problem? I have...

I got a swarm call this afternoon

Good luck. Hope you get the help and the bees appreciate the new home.

Best way to put the entrance block in.

You don't need to wait until dark. Easier if you can see what you're doing. I take the roof off the hive to reduce a bit of weight then ease up one front corner of the brood box with a hive tool and slip in one end of the block. Walk round to the other corner, lift and ease in that end. Make...
