    Social distancing

I'm sure that I'm not the first person to have this thought. How much damage do we as Beekeepers cause through placing Hives too close to each other? Whilst our bees may not spread disease or infection by coughing on each other, they could do so by sharing nectar. If the colonies are too close...

    Wax moths and spiders.

At a beekeeper meeting I attended last night an experienced beekeeper suggested putting a spider in my stored supers as this would help reduce wax moth damage. Has anyone any experience of this?

    Sweet Chestnut,

Whilst out enjoying the Autumn sunshine today we found a lovely sweet chestnut tree with lots of chestnuts scattered around beneath it. I now have a bowl full on the kitchen worktop waiting to be eaten. :cheers2:

How do Beekeepers manage with Nationals

Looking back over my records this past year there have been occasions when my Langstroth Poly Hive had 9 Brood frames of Brood. On Average it is 6. So how do Nationals cope with this as their frames are smaller. I am considering changing to Nationals as the weight of them would be so much...

    Varroa scratching post

I just saw this on fleabay and thought it an intersting topic to discuss An anti varroa mite disc measures 120mm across and is simply slipped into the hive so the bees can use it like a scratching post to wound and dislodge their parasites . Instead of the varroa mites killing bees - now the...

    Varroa treatment

I am not planning on using Maqs next year due to problems it has caused me recently. However A thought... The active ingredient is Formic Acid 250 mls of which you can by on eb@y for £3.99 Considerably less than the Maqs treatment. So Anyone fancy trying to reproduce this and make their own?

    Maqs killing Bees

Whilst using the Maqs varroa treatment this year, from a total of 10 hives I lost 2 queens. Out of the other 8 Hives ain all but one case the Queen stopped laying and the Brood reduced in size from around 8 frames to about 2. So for me this year Varroa hasnt been my major problem, Maqs has. I...

    Wax extraction.

With all the Honey safely extracted and stored I decided to do something about all the old wax and frames that I was left with. Whilst some of the supers are still usable I still had several frames, especially old Brood frames, that needed cleaning. With the warm summer weather passed the use...

    Grumpy Neighbours

Whilst out feeding my 'Bees' this morning I had an altercation with the owner of the land next to the field where I have my Bees. For three years now I have been using a public footpath across this 'ladys' land to gain access to my site, and then jumping over the fence into the field where my...

    Queen longevity

I read the following on a Scottish Bee suppliers site: 'New research has proved that queens live longer if left in mating Nucs for over 3 weeks before caging. (4 weeks preferred)'. Why would this be?

    Insurance

One of our members has very recently had EFB in one of her three hives. This hive had to be destroyed by the bee inspector. Unfortunately she also had a swarm in a nuc box. This counts as another hive and the BDI insurance will not pay compensation for her destroyed hive. I wish this was made...

    Another Swarm

The sun has returned and the Bees are Happy. Maybe a little too happy, as some have decided to go off on Holiday. About an hour ago I had a swarm of Bees arrive in my garden. This is the second swarm my 'Bait Hive' has collected this year. bee-smillie
