    Acarine Thoracic Dissection

Just to let the interested know and maybe help others who resurrect this thread in the future and are having similar problems. I have finally mastered decapitating the bees. I was concentrating too much on rolling the head back and not pulling upwards at the same time. I think I must have been...

    Acarine Thoracic Dissection

Hi, I am attempting to practice dissection to expose the 1st thoracic trachea to look for evidence of acarine infestation. My problem is 50 % of the time when removing the head I also remove the trachea leaving exposed only the flight muscles or torn trachea. If I manage to remove the head...

    Studying feeding

Thanks both, makes sense too me 1:1 thought I might be missing something as the FERA Bee unit guidelines say 2:1 with foundation. Copied and pasted instructions. Maybe I should ask them why they recommend 2:1 with foundation! As Per their guidelines; Prepare a clean brood chamber filled with...

Thanks, with my limited experience and knowledge I would have agreed with you always thought 2:1 was just for storage.

    Studying feeding

Thanks for reply, I understand why you wait 2-3 days after hiving swarm but wonder why you feed 2:1 strength during Bailey Comb change. FERA guidelines on national Bee Unit website and other reference books state 2:1. Just wondered reasons behind the different strengths for wax drawing for the...

    Studying feeding

Just doing some studying on feeding and wondered why you feed 2:1 strength syrup during a bailey comb change to encourage bees to draw wax but 1:1 strength syrup to a swarm ( after 2-3 days ) to encourage wax drawing.

Hi, Thanks for the replies. This was new foundation in the brood box so no Enrico I had not used a hot air gun to decap. Interested to hear your suggestions Muswellmetro thanks.

    Bees capping empty drawn cells

Hi, I have been a member of my local BKA for 3 years and have had bees of my own for 18 months. I split my one colony earlier in the year so now have 3. All are doing well but the smaller of the splits currently has 5 seams of bees and 4 with emerging brood. They are dummied down to 8 frames...

Bee sting remedy - hot water

I have always reacted badly to bites/stings of any type, ant, mosquito, bee etc etc. In recent years I discovered the use of heat for relief from the dreadful itching that drives you mad and stops you sleeping. Apply heat by hair dryer to the sting for about 45 secs, as hot as you can bare...

    Charged queen cups discharged!

Cheers, I feel better, thought I was imagining things but was quite certain 24 hrs earlier there were juicy larva swimming in royal jelly in two of the cups, the sealed queen cells were all intact so was still able to split the colony. Presumably because the bees were happy with the sealed...

    Charged queen cups discharged!

Yesterday inspected my queen less hive on day 7 to check for emergency queen cells of which there were 4 sealed, one unsealed and 5 queen cups of which I am sure 2 were charged having royal jelly and a larva in. As the colony was large I decided I would make up a nuc with a frame containing 2 of...
