    Hello from Derby

I'm in Ilkeston so not too far from you, but I however am starting to learn too! As you are in Derby, your second port of call (after reading the forum stickies), should maybe visiting the Markeaton Craft village (in markeaton park) and call into the honey pot.

    Bumble Bees

I was wondering if anyone here had any tips on how to encourage bumble bees into gardens. I would like to make a nest box or two but have read that some commercial boxes don't tend to have very good success. I saw on Blue Peter (years ago) how to make what looked like a good nest box but glueing...

    Derbyshire (erewash) bee keepers?

Hi, I was hoping there might be some bee keepers in, or near to where I live so I could have a look at your hives and maybe help out a bit to find out a little more about bee keeping. I live in Ilkeston and can drive. Many thanks in advance, Ben

    Protective suit colours

I'm probably only going to have one hive. At least for a good while anyway. I guess this will be outside too so probably won't be getting that sweaty!

    Protective suit colours

I realise that these suits aren't particularly for the fashion conscious!, but I wondered why they are predominantly available in white? I did read somewhere that dark colours make bees a bit agitated/aggressive, is this true? If so, why don't I see light blue, pink or yellow etc suits for sale...

    Beekeeping courses?

Hi, I want some bees! I got me a little book the other day, bees at the bottom of the garden. There's some useful info in there and also a lot of stuff I assumed too. However, I like to have hands on experience. I'm aware that beekeeping courses exist, and I have also found out they vary in cost...

    Obtaining bees

Thanks. So does changing the queen not upset the rest of the hive? Are there any special precautions to take?

    Obtaining bees

Why would one queen potentially be better than another?

    Obtaining bees

Oh okay, cool, I'll have a look. I guess spring is the best time to set up a colony is it? And yes, I did think that, which was why I asked hypothetically!

    Obtaining bees

Hi, I hope I'm not dragging up old subjects, and as a regular forum browser I'm aware there is a search function, but it takes ages to look through and find the exact info I want: So here goes! I know I can buy bees, the shop near me not only sells equipment but also bees so I know I'm sorted in...

    Hi!

Hey there folks, I'm hoping to get me a bee hive soon. So I'll be trolling all over this forum and hijacking threads left right and centre asking probably stupid questions in a bid to find out as much as I can! I'll also be signing up to the Derbyshire association. I'm off to have a look around...
