    Drop in Feeders

Mike, that all makes sense - thanks. Sounds like contact feeder should do, and I presume easier for the ladies to get to, as it is direct over top of brood and no climbing etc.

Is there anyone out there who can answer the question above?

    Drop in Feeders

Queen Bee - Your Majesty - thanks for that and now realise what a frame feeder is. But my real question is regarding use of rapid and contact feeders for the final Autumn feed? I was under the impression that is was beneficial, in fact important that, one uses an Ashforth type feeder at this...

    Drop in Feeders

That sounds like the one. No good then. I also thought rapid feeders were no good for autumn feeding - not sure why. By frame feeder, is that an ashforth? They are so much dosh, but guess if that is what is needed then so be it?

Has anyone experience with Thorne's plastic drop-in feeders for national hives?

    Drowned bees?

Thats a good idea - but why is it happening now when before there was no problem at all. The only difference being an expansion of numbers in the colony. Surely they dont push each other off the centre bit?????

    Drowned bees?

I actually had to think myself on that one!! No trenches, rivers, lakes! But I find it very odd that they still managed to do it when feeder was half empty. And not just the odd one but at a guess about 50 each time.

    Drowned bees?

Drowned in the rapid feeder. Syrup mixed at 1/1 water sugar.

    Drowned bees?

Had some bad weather recently and decided to give my expanding nuc a feed in the evening in order to help draw out new foundation in the super above. But the following morning there were loads of them drowned - thought maybe I had filled the feeder too much so left it on. The next morning same...

    Why overwinter nucs?

Thanks Jon. There is so much fascinating stuff to learn regarding looking after the wee beasties. Had a bit of a moment 2 days ago. Going through my one and only slowly expanding nuc, a little darling managed to pay me a very personal visit by getting inside my veil!! Not sure what to do with...

    Why overwinter nucs?

So, if in August/Sept you find a queen cell developing, what is the process from then on?

    Why overwinter nucs?

Jon, I understand that in early - mid season, but are queen cells being developed Aug/sept and how do they have time to build up to survive the winter?

    Why overwinter nucs?

There is much chat at the moment about overwintering nucs and types of nuc boxes. Why does overwintering of nucs happen? Where are these nucs coming from at this time or how are they created? I thought any weak colony should be combined with another. You can probably tell I am a real newbie!

Flying or dying in the rain?

I would hope you are right on this one. They do seem to leave things till the very last minute. Sure they have ability to sense climate changes far better than us wee mortals can ever hope to - but I wonder?

Flying or dying in the rain?

Over the last few days our weather here has dramatically changed. Very heavy and repeated showers and windy - guess same as most folk getting. But my brave little darlings still come in with pollen between showers. Does this mean that foragers caught out in one of the downpours drown/die or can...

    One or 1&1/2 brood

Scrivens - managed moors on Mull???????? Unless of course you are talking about muirburns that turn into raging infernos consuming a few hundred acres of forestry at the same time? No all is wild and pretty woolly here, but my bees will soon sort it out - they born and bred here as her majesty...

I am supposedly in a non heather area! wonder what all that bell shaped stuff is and very ling like plants that stretch for miles behind me?? Queen Bee - thanks for your input, and by the looks of your join date - welcome to the...
