    Swarm producing queen cups

So I picked up a swarm a few days ago and popped it in a hive (bit of a rush job...just appeared outside of a neighbour's house and needed moving quickly). They're active and sorting things out but I noticed that they're producing queen cups on one of the frames...no eggs anywhere yet. Does this...

    Recent queen cell

I just started going through one of my hives and came across an open and empty queen cell, with chewed edges. I've not seen a swarm recently, and before it got to it I was reasonably confident at being Q+ as I saw larvae (I can never see eggs anyway, sight isn't that good!). I closed up as...

Brood both sides of the Queen excluder...

I've just checked my bees and happened to have a quick look in the supers (I'm very late taking them off!). I found 2 frames (at one edge) with capped and open brood! There's also plenty of it in the brood box. Does this mean I'm more likely to have a leak in my excluder, or 2 queens? It's not...

    Smelly honey

I have some old wax and honey from old frame...basically just sitting in a tub. I was going to melt it down so it's in one lump and the honey can be separated. The honey smells a little fermented or bad (Although it can't really go bad). Can this be fed back to the bees or do I need to throw it? P

2 year olds, bees and fences

Hello! I'm in need of some ideas if I may please? Attached is a map of part of my garden. My 2 year old is keen to get in to the veg bed area and start learning about growing stuff...he can't talk, but that's definitely what he wants... The bees, in their current position, are currently...

    "Raw" honey

Is there a temperature you can heat honey to that will make it runny enough to jar, but so that it's still technically "raw" honey?

    Syrup

I had a big tub of syrup which I've fed to both of my hives, and is usually enough and tend to just keep feeding until they take no more. But this year they've emptied the lot...do I carry on feeding until they stop taking it, or do I just hold back now? I have some syrup I made earlier in...

    Best temperature for honey

What is the best temperature for getting honey liquid enough to jar, but not high enough to change the taste or ruin...so it's still raw basically

    Is it time?

Is it time to pull supers off and start treating for varroa or are we still mid flow?and feeding? I get this time of year wrong every year!

    How to steralise jars?

Before jarring honey, how do you steralise the jars? I've tried boiling water, but drying the jars takes for-ever...plus they're not supposed to be exposed to the air for too long as then they're no longer steralised...it seems quite a challenge!

    A supercedure challenge

So early in June both of my hives swarmed (although I thought one of them was being superceded...they swarmed anyway!!). They took aaaages to get going again but one of the hives appears to be producing brood again (a slightly major varroa problem...but that's another story) which I think is...

    Too many stores?

I've just inspected my hives again hoping to god to find some brood....I was expecting it a couple of weeks ago as both hives had swarmed and new queens were being trained up. Last week I saw a smattering of brood in one hive but couldn't find HRH...in the other I found HRH but no brood. So...

    Well this is irritating...

I have just gone to jar up my honey...we don't normally warm or do anything, just let it settle for a few days then put it in the jars. We have 2 buckets worth...periodically checked the top bucket just to make sure it hadn't set and all was fine. Have just jarred all of the top bucket only to...

    Labels and selling jars

Is there a list of rules for labeling and selling honey in jars? At the moment I have a jar with a brown label tied to it with string (looks nice, good for presents) but I'm very sure that this won't be good enough if I wanted to sell them.

How much does a bucket cost?!

I mean...I know, but £20 for a bucket and a tap seems like a LOT of money! Am I missing something?

    A successful day...I think

I *think* I've had a successful day with this...I'm sure someone will tell me it's rubbish but I've nothing to compare it to! I've just extracted from both of my hives and took off 58lbs in total (is that about right?). One hive had 2 supers, the other only 1. Randomly, I'm pretty sure there...

    Uncapping methods

I've just watched a video on using a heat gun to uncap the honey on the super. I'm a bit confused Using an uncapping fork you strip away the wax and filter any out that makes it in to the extractor. But with the heat gun it melts it so goes through the filter in to your honey...surely it's...

OSR, swarms, supercedures...I can't keep up!

I've just managed to get in and inspect my hives - alas I think I may have been too late for one of them, their numbers feel a little low and I can't find a queen/eggs. Loads of capped queen cells too, so I think she's gone. In the super (unlike the other hive, they don't appear to have made...

    Too much smoke?

I wondered...is it possible to use too much smoke? I puff it on the top to move them out of the way etc etc, but at the end of an inspection now it looks like they've all just walked out the front door and are waiting for me to stop poking around before they come back in. If I puff some smoke...

Ok, what on earth are they playing at??

So a couple of weeks ago I saw quite a few queen cells, high on the frames, some on the edge, some in the middle of the frames. The brood was a bit bobbly, I assumed she had turned in to a drone layer. I've just been to check, as I thought at least I might find a new queen in there, I'd done...
