Checked all my colonies today and they were all out of fondant (Neopoll) even though I stocked them all up less than 2 weeks ago so must be expanding nicely. However, one of the hives looked quite weak so I'm thinking her Maj hasn't made it through the Winter but still too early to open yet to...

Indeed, I agree, Kingspan does get munched. All my colonies have it and about half have been munched... I've even painted it before putting in the hive and they still munch it regardless!!!

I've heard they use Tartan paint North of the Border.......:facts:

I had this happen to me a few years ago, never again! - they had built up so much brace comb it was entirely covering the underneath of the crown-board (all x5 colonies did the same). I then devised a cunning plan to put the crown-board on (so the holes spread the most combs) and filled above...

I know but bog standard fondant is only feeding them with the bare minimum- and it tends to go rock hard in my experiences........ I could spend time making up a solution with glycerine and thymol but for a few quid it doesn't weigh up for me personally..... A major seller selling fondant that...

Thanks for all the good solid advice folks, much appreciated indeed :-) I have now sealed the hive in question and will get the bees tested before doing anything now just to be sure I know what I'm dealing with, but it does look like a heavy case of Nosema although I'm not ruling anything out...
