    Beekeeper's jacket

I first bought a smock when I started, then I discovered, painfully, that I suffered from the condition known as "Builder's Bum". Since then it has been the full suit.

Can anyone ID this flower for me ?

In all honesty it does produce a smell that would make a maggot gag.

    wasp nest

Foam works well, or a good slosh of ant powder in the entrance does the trick for me

Can anyone ID this flower for me ?

Yup, that is definitely comfrey. I decided to have a go at making some feed for my plants from it. Next door neighbours weren't too happy about it. Ended up getting a warning letter through the post fromthe local Environmental health dept.

    Number of Beekeepers.

Talking to the chap in my local beekeeping supply store, the numbers in the last few years have been dropping off again. People realising that beekeeping in and of itself isn't going to save the world.

    Hive Alive BBC2 On Now!

I do get the occasional leg in there but it all gets filtered out when the honey goes into the settling tank.

    New beekeeping dilemma

Another important aspect of the whole swarming affair is not to panic. You should be a member of your local BKA, there should be someone to talk to. Remember, if you do see a QC there is always the option of going in, having a cup of tea and working out what your options are. You should try...

2 National hives stolen in Inkpen, Berkshire

:i agree: very sensible worded a gun is a dangerous tool in the hands of a fool if someone enters your property and does damage leaving you at a loss, he or she should not be allowed to leave with more than they interred with...

    Maqs

I think the MAQ's strips play havoc with the slotted metal queen excluders.

Perils of leaving kit laying around

Was the swarm yours? Or have you gained another colony?

    Capped queen cells no eggs

I was under the impression that the queen a few days prior to swarming would likely stop laying, in a bid to slim down for the flight. Therefore if there were no eggs she could still be around.

Experiment: Queen Cells in Jam Jar

I recently put 2 sealed QC's in an incubator @ 35 degrees C. after 6 days they hatched, I ended up putting them in the freezer to use as swarm lure next year, I'll just have to see if that works.

    flower of the moment: June

I have this Cherry Laurel hedge, although it is clipped hard in winter and there is no sign of any flower on the outside it is drawing in so many bees that you can't help but notice the noise of them when you walk past, I haven't ventured to have a look so I don't know if it is the cluster of...

    when to add new super?

I find that if you have a super full of capped honey above the brood box that is enough of a barrier, the Q won't cross it to lay in the supers above. The QE isn't just a barrier for the queen, all the bees find it somewhat tricky to get through.
