I had assumed it was heather as we are on the edge of heather moors, and the honey has a strong scent, but it's the very dark colour of it and the wax that has me puzzled. And it was made long before ivy flowered.

This year I took some late honey from newly established colonies - they didn't make any earlier. A large proportion of it was very dark, both the comb and the honey. And would not spin out. I have pressed it - but I wonder what it was that made it and the comb so very dark? It was new comb.

A friend was advised to use manuka honey to help her over a minor illness, I offered her raw honey foraged only a few miles from her home. She preferred to pay premium price for manuka she admitted she didn't like tasting. But bang...

I've just seen an advert for foam hive jackets. Does anyone use these? I know insulation is the big thing right now - but I'd like to hear from anyone who has used these.

Autumn is approaching and the long evenings will be begging for a good book to be read. I want a beekeeping book that is very detailed like Hooper, but READABLE and covers bee biology as well. What would people recommend? I know there is great stuff online, but I do like a book.

Also remember that body colour is not a guarantee of genetic AMM-ness. Wing morphology is an indicator, but only specialised DNA testing will tell you the racial lineage of your bees. I relay this information from various sources, but specifically Dorian Pritchard, geneticist, bee breeder...
