    Router table Vs Buying hive

I have all the equipment to build hives should I need/want to however as stated above the sale prices are often so cheap the time and effort and buying of the wood to start with make buying the kits in a no brainer. That said if you like woodwork and have the time then it is all part and parcel...

    Coalville Leicestershire Out Apiaries

As part of my day job I deal with a lot of farmers, from time to time I get landowners looking for bees, if they are close to me I obviously nab them  However a bit further a field are no use to me so if anyone is interested in land near Coalville I have a contact with 200 acres looking...

    borage

A good OSR crop would be 5mt /ha a good wheat crop will be 10mt/ha, borage is coming back, and with poor OSR prices some reluctant farmers are looking to borage for a break crop to replace OSR. The reason a lot are reluctant are a combination of it is a risky crop that once swathed has to 'ret'...

hive not inspected for 2years. what to expect?

I think Chris made a fair point, I had attempts from people thinking they could claim 'abandoned' hives on one farm that I visited, abandoned to them meant that there was long grass around them and not visited during 9-5 on a weekend. However that has now been cleared up, so back to the...

How far do you travel to visit your hives ?

between 4 miles and 60 miles, the 60 miles is purely for Borage, Most sites are between 4 and 8 miles away. C B

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Yay post 10,000, strimmed round some of the hives where the grass was getting too long, will help keep the hives dry. C B

Dearth of oilseed rape sown this autumn?

That will most likely be Charlock, a good frost tends to kill it. C B

Dearth of oilseed rape sown this autumn?

OSR seed sales slightly down year on year but not greatly, on the whole we expect a similar area of as was seen 2 years ago, remember farmers tend to 'block crop' areas within the rotation, so one area may be awash with OSR one year then not for a year or two then back in to OSR. 600mtrs is...

    Slotted top bars

I too have come across a fair few of these, I tried to reuse them however the foundation I had was too thick for the thin slot. I can tell you they make great kindling!;) C B

    Lost phone?

Just thought I'd share what happened today, during my rounds checking the sheep I lost my phone, I didn't realise till it was dark and raining, (luckily the phone has a good cover). I tried in vain to retrace my steps with a torch but considering it was lost along a 1.5mile drive and 3 separate...

No fun being a bee farmer

Wow seriously bad luck, apart from one unexplained poisoning of a small apiary that was out of OSR period. I have never had an issue with sprays on OSR, just leave them out and they're fine. It takes time to find the correct and most suitable sites, over the years when I've been desperate I've...

Bees v Wasps we are winning but

Do it at night though so you get the most of them, other wise you will just end up with a lot of homeless stragglers who will seek revenge!!!

    MAQS experience

I was surprised how much grass scorch these strips cause, a good 10-12inches of deal grass in front of each hive. Potent gear, didn't notice any significant amounts of dead bees though so hopefully a good sign.

Top Bar bait hive in the Wyre Forest anybody?

oh yes a couple of years ago I had someone come onto private land along way from the road (granted there was a footpath a hundred yards away) and plonk a bait hive in front of my apiary, without permission, never did find out who did it. C B

Are you planning to replace white queens ?

I still have floating around in the mix 2 green queens, I keep breaking their big colonies down (have done each year) and they end up in a nuc as a spare which then builds up and up, and ends up being an overwintering colony again. I have tried to breed from them and whilst they have produced...

    Lost a hive to wasps

Wasps have gone crazy in last 10 days, I am just back from a small out apiary where there are 6 very good colonies (well they were), there are heaps of dead wasps outside each hive (on reduced entrances) with many hives now powerless to stopping the wasps enter. I will pack up and move those 6...

E mails required ! Himalayan Balsam in BBC R4

Balsam has been in the UK over 150years and still nothing natural has developed to control it, we must remember that not all science is agro chemical and gm, if science can find a natural solution that is taking too long to 'evolve' under natural condition and can accelerate the transition under...
