    Queen confusion

Should have said that my original Q was marked, neither were her.

    Queen confusion

They had superseded, I’d seen polished cells and the new Q a week ago, only saw eggs this week. Could there have been a 2nd cell I’d missed and they had 2 which both mated and some aligned to each? But that wouldn’t explain the flying Q I’ve never seen anything this confusing.

    Queen confusion

Pleased to see my new Q had mated successfully and started laying, spotted her too - a big ginger Q - so popped that frame into an empty nuc box whilst I picked up my kit to mark her. When I picked up the frame again a bee was hanging off her leg trying to sting her. Moved that bee off and...

    Badgers

    Hopefully in wooden hives soon.

    Badgers

This last couple of weeks they've been going for my polynucs. Knocked them over and dragged about by the strap but didn't get in. Nucs now wedged in with spare boxes, logs and weighted with concrete blocks.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Checked my colony that was Q- in April, (but had a lot of bees), the new Q they raised from donated eggs is now laying. Took down extra QC from nuc I set up.

    drone foundation in super

Can you explain why the frames in the super that didn't have any foundation were all drawn out with a large cell size if the bees don't like to fill them? When given free choice they made this their preference.

    Condensation/dampness

As the weather was so good today had a final check before winter. It seemed very damp on the crown boards with a bit of mould on some. Anyone put anything in to reduce moisture there? I know they do in the US.

    Weekly Inspections (Why?)

How do you teach your bees to stop taking the foundation out at the sides of frames?

    Splitting hives

As I don't have an another apiary over 3 miles away I have to do them on the same site, but I always close up and put up foliage which seems to have worked so far. I do give a very small entrance to defend too.

    Queen Cells in drone-laying colony

I found several charged QC in a hive that was almost all drone brood last week, I wasn't sure if they would have found a few fertilised eggs from a failing queen or were desperate. Asked at the apiary meeting and all the experienced beeks said they would only draw cells with fertilised eggs so...

    Smoker stolen

:icon_204-2: Bet they've no idea what the smoker is and not sure it will sell well!

    Smoker stolen

My sons live in S10, whereabouts were the thefts?

    Smoker stolen

Don't think they were after the bees, just opportunists.

    Smoker stolen

Had a 'visitor' to my garden yesterday, forced their way into 2 of my sheds - nothing to steal in either, lifted the roof on my stack of spare supers (which is next to my unfriendly bees - if they'd lifted that roof instead they would have soon gone). My smoker was outside the back door where I...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Quite warm but wet in the morning, decided to take the opportunity to inspect once the rain stopped. Both queens installed last week released from their cages and now laying.

    Queen(less)

Five years down the line think I might have more idea, but no.

    Queen(less)

On my first inspection of my 4 colonies in March, two had brood and seemed queenright whereas 2 had none. Subsequent inspection showed an increasing amount of drone brood in one of the originally ok colonies, so only one colony now seemed right. Unfortunately this one colony was the one with a...

    Dealing with aggressive colony

I think you operate on a bigger scale - I don't have 6 empty nuc boxes!
