Feeding - bag of sugar method

It is better than nothing. I've had to do it sometimes in a pinch, and they've made it, but if you have any frames from a dead out, or get a few from a friend, try that first. Just in my experience, though

    A Noise.

No. There are different scenarios, but primarily tooting is a battle cry. It usually signifies that the Q is out and looking to rumble. Sometimes, while a freshly emerged Q is hardening, the others will emerge tooting - answering the battle challenge -, or occasionally (though never witnessed...

    A Noise.

Only virgins will make this sound, though sometimes even before they emerge, so you could still make a split, if possible

    Sugar syrup....1:1 or 2:1 ?

Very interesting - thank you! I'm afraid I don't understand these terms. Please, no offense was meant. I just meant that since your season is so short and winters so long, that it may (and apparently does not) affect the amount or concentration of sugar.

    Sugar syrup....1:1 or 2:1 ?

Yea - I have too. You got to do what you got to do... I have to ask - How long is the season in Finland? (I was there for a day 30 years ago in April, and it was cold - by my standards, at least :)) What is an average haul for a strong hive? What kind of bees are preferred or common there? I...

    Sugar syrup....1:1 or 2:1 ?

Finman - for any feeding. I try never to feed if possible, but spring came so late this year many of us had no choice. oliver - quite true

    Sugar syrup....1:1 or 2:1 ?

Just today I was talking with a guy running about a thousand hives, and he swears by three to one (three water, one sugar), as this is closer to nectar, and reduces the need for them to spend as much energy then gathering water. He swears they build wax like nothing else. I had never heard this...

    Advice on Today's Cut Out

No, unfortunately it doesn't sound like it's worth saving. But you definitely have a queen, and she hasn't laid anything at all? Weird. Personally (and this is just one guy's opinion) I would pinch the queen and combine them with your lightest hive. 'One in the hand' and all that.... Keep us...

    Advice on Today's Cut Out

Pollen coming in is usually a good sign of established residency. Good luck.

    Advice on Today's Cut Out

good deal and good luck beeno - please keep us posted on the results. (Occasionally I've had queens bolt on me even after workers started foraging, so I always like to know what others are doing and how it went)

    Advice on Today's Cut Out

That's what I've done in similar situations, and usually she will start laying in a day or so. Once she does she should stick around.

    Clothing

NOT cowboying (was that a dig?), but hey, you're going to get stung sometimes anyway, and let's face it - that stuff gets pricey after all the equipment, smoker, veil, etc. and I was taught early on that, if nothing else, at least always use a veil. There is SO much stuff out there that is not...

    Clothing

When I first started I was on the cheap too - a veil is all you REALLY need, though a pair of work gloves can come in handy. For full protection, jeans, a long sleeve shirt and some rubber bands and you're all set

    Ants in Hive

They wont really mess with the bees, or vise-versa, but I don't really like seeing them everywhere (though they ARE great for cleaning out old frames, dead outs, etc) If you really want them gone, try cinnamon. Just pour some around the inner cover hole, or wherever they're getting in; they...
