Mine have been on the Balsam too. I see the ivy getting ready to flower, but I need to look at the situation. Still got a super to take off one and get them drawing and filling stores round the brood box, ideally!
Rich and Oliver, thanks for the advice. When I got back the parent colony had evidently recovered. From their behavior, and the fact that they were evicting the occasional varroa infested worker pupa, they evidently did have a queen waiting to come into lay in those nice polished brood areas...
Four weeks after sending out its primary swarm on 12th May (which is happily rehived and thriving) the parent colony seems to be eggless.
