MAQS, do you still need to use Oxalic ?

Hi All, Visited my local supplier today and bought MAQS for my hives, I asked if you still need to use oxalic acid as you would do with Apiguard, he didn't know, so has anyone any idea wether you still need to treat with oxalic or not ? Regards CD

    Bees flying !

Hi All, A few times I've noticed that on a warm and sunny afternoon several hundred bees seem to come out of the hive and just seem to be flying round and round they'll do this for around 15-20 minutes before going back in again and everything returning to normal, it looks almost as though...

    Robbing bees with a difference

Hi All, We've a few large Cardoons growing in the back garden, they're starting to flower and the bees, honey and bumbles, love them, I like to spend a few quiet minutes watching the bees coming and going. The bumbles seem to dig right into the base of the flower for the nectar but get covered...

Maximun number of hives in a given area ?

Hi All, I live in the sticks, open country on one side and a river on the other, the land surrounding is mainly arable, OSR, wheat etc with a few fields being left for hay, the riverbank is covered in weeds, dandelion, clover, borrage thistles and the like, as a guestimate, how many hives would...

    Buying Bees

Hi All, As I have my hive (14x12 national) all set up and ready for occupation, I'm hoping to be in a position to buy a colony or nuc towards the end of this month. Given the unpredictable weather and the remaining bit of 'summer' that we may have left, do you think this is too late to be...

    Mating Flight ??

Hi All, I went across to the hive earlier and there's the queen outside with a small group of attendants, they seemed to be feeding and grooming her, she was there for about 20 minutes or so before crawling back into the hive, was this the aftermath of a mating flight ?

Hi All, I've been busy this afternoon assembling a 'flat pack' national, so far I've got the floor and brood box sorted, the supers and roof are a job for tomorrow, this leads me to this weeks silly question, what holds the sections together, is it just gravity, should there be internal lips...
