    Swarm+ex-dronelayer combine?

I dispatched the drone laying queen in a top bar colony this afternoon, then came back round the corner to see a swarm moving into my bait hive (also with top bars rather than frames in it (I hope! As far as I can remember!) I don't know where the swarm came from, tho' it's obviously local...

    Whose eggs are these?

I uncovered (and spoiled in doing so) these eggs, sandwiched between my top bar roof and its cover. They were much bigger eggs and cells than honey bee; earthen walls as you can see. - I should have tasted the yellow powder they were surrounded with. Perhaps dandelion pollen? Does anyone have...

Aggressive/defensive colony - prospects for combining?

Yes, a swarm I caught earlier in the year - and do wish I hadn't A bit defensive all along but now, even allowing for the time of year, unacceptable. Now in a 3 tier poly nuc with feeder (and now well welded together of course). I would site them somewhere secluded over the winter but after...

Combining Q+ nuc to Q- hive

    - in the same apiary. i need to do this, and it'd be much better to add the Q+ nuc (which has a super on it) to the Q-National hive in the hive's current position. Do you think it would be best to start by transferring the bees from the nuc, with all their frames, into a National brood box on...

Extract of Wax Moth Larvae - ??

Can anyone read this? I see "Oral" and "Nasty" (!) but can make out next to nothing of the Russian. What is it? Some sort of oral-nasty remedy for something? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Extract-of-wax-moth-larvae-50ml-from-Siberia-Russia/323280776483?hash=item4b45092d23:g:HAwAAOSwMM9bDyVA

    Mating swarm or cast?

What happens if you inadvertently shake a mating swarm into a skep? Would they all attempt to return home at the earliest opportunity? Or is the fact that a small swarm does stay inside the skep for more than a few minutes, a definite indication that it is not a mating swarm but a cast?

    Replacement veil/material?

I'm wondering if anyone's found what they think is good quality mesh for replacing a veil? Or whether any of the suit manufacturers sell replacement fabric for just the veil? The veil on my old suit, with black plastic covered thread mesh, now reflects light as the plastic is wearing off BUT...

    BeeBase Hive census

Have thousands of dutiful beekeepers crashed the BeeBase site by trying to enter hive census info today? - They have an 'internal server problem' so it says.

Updates on alternatives to smoke - ?

ie Are there really any viable ones? Is 'liquid smoke' any use? I ask as at present I'm looking after hives in 4 diff locations - and in 3 of those only 1 hive! I carry around the smoker with me, also a spray bottle of water (sometimes with a little sugar in it). Often don't need the smoker...

    Making house martin nests

Has anyone tried this? Well I know that the birds are professionals at this, but for something they manage with only mud and spit I seem to be making a meal of my first attempts! Decided to build these and reinforce them with mesh nailed to the boards, as magpies brought down the last...

    Hornets in autumn

There have been hornets (European!!) living around here for some years. This year I realise there's a nest in the roof above my bedroom window. The only consideration so far this year is that, with the days shortening recently, I see I can't have the windows open and the lights on at night...

What to do next? (swarm question!)

Would really appreciate advice of what best to do next: Went out this morning at 9am - swarm rising up into a tree (And no I hadn't looked right through for a couple of weeks - being more concerned they were just short of food!) Found the queen (unclipped) near/under the hive with just a few...
