    Ss honey gate valve

In my opinion the mark of a good company is what they do when things go wrong. If it is faulty, and they are a good company, then in my view the publicity about how good they were in fixing the problem matters much more than hiding the issue and letting someone else come across the same problem...

    Showing honey (colours)

Yep, its total bollocks. If checking against the standard requires 280 quid outlay as seen on Ebay recently then it is a standard way beyond the reach of many. It's time the 'standard' was abandoned, all judging should be on taste not on pointless visual things. Even better forget...

    Shrub identification request

Many thanks for all the replies. Forgot to include a ruler alongside the photos in my original post. For reference the leaves are about 85mm long, and the flowers 8mm across. There were two varieties in close proximity, dark green as shown, and one with more silvery leaves. At first sight...

    Shrub identification request

Could someone please try and identify this shrub for me? In flower now, covered in honey bees and bumbles Sweet smelling flowers, no odour from crushed leaves, about 4ft high maintained hedge, dense foliage.

    BeeLab Hive monitoring project

Power hog it is not. ATmega328 Power-down mode WDT enabled, VCC = 3V 4.2μA Power-save mode 32 kHz TOSC enabled 0.8 μA Power Supply Current Idle 4 MHz, VCC = 3V 0.3 mA Power Supply Current Active 4 MHz, VCC = 3V 1.7 mA IMHO 'saving' any more power than that IS a pointless exercise.

Cut Comb Frame Size SN1 or Manley

New frames, all new fresh foundation, warmed with hairdryer to remove any bloom. No castellations (never ever use them), all 10 frames butted up close Frame 1 and 3 not drawn Frame 2 drawn to leave 1 bee space between comb and foundation in frames 1 and 3 = 80 -8 -8 = circa 64mm comb It was...

Cut Comb Frame Size SN1 or Manley

Yes, and even worse I only found out after a few pieces were already in the box, I ended up tipping it out onto a stainless tray and hacking the bottom off the comb. I put it down to propolis on the frame shoulders and some adjacent frames that were drawn out slightly less. In my opinion the...

Cut Comb Frame Size SN1 or Manley

and, in my experience, about 10mm deeper than the commonly available cut comb containers.

    Swarmed! 29th September!

Just a few observations (some already covered above) 3 to 4 frames of brood will easily cover 9 frames when emerged The hive may have had a low or average mite load and there are not enough brood cycles in two months to bring a low mite count to the point at which treatment is necessary in the...

    Extracting 14x12 frames??

I retrofitted a Thornes 9 frame radial cage about three or four years ago into my tangential only extractor (a Taylors one, so at least 30 years old) The cage will (just) take 9 National Manley frames. Fit the outer pair in each three frame section, then the central one, after extracting...

Source for 2.25 inch honey valve

Richard, I've already done that but had hoped there was maybe a 'cheaper' source. I get the feeling most manufacturers have standardised on 1.5 inch valves now, which could possibly be retrofitted in this case but it would be a pain to have to do so.

Source for 2.25 inch honey valve

Is anyone aware of a convenient, preferably UK source for a 2.25 inch (57mm) stainless steel honey valve? It needs to be a through fixing type rather than threaded into a spigot. I felt sure Th*rnes used to sell them but can't find them either in the printed catalogue or online.

    Bait hive - poly nuc?

The hole on a poly nuc from Pains is from memory about 20mm diameter although most of mine are the early type with the wrap around cutway entrance on the corner between the front and floor of the hive. My plywood nucs that have attracted a number of swarms have an entrance of 16mm diameter.

    bait hive

Seen something similar but some 'days' were a bit compressed. On the afternoon of the day before swarm arrival and in the hours immediately before arrival next day there was no activity. The bait hive was a spare nuc and sat on a garden seat.

    advice re Apidea please

I lined up the apidea frames to be directly above the frames in the box below, they extended the comb down to connect to them. As for why I did the top and then bottom entrance thing, the apidea was originally sat on top of an adjacent national hive and I wanted to avoid moving their entrance...

    Bait hive - poly nuc?

I've had numerous swarms arrive in 6 frame plywood national nucs deployed as bait hives. Their success rate is a bit lower than that of a full size national but not by much. I don't use poly nucs for bait hives but I've had them sat around with used comb in them on quite a few occasions...

    Has the bubble burst?

There are round about 1600 members of the Yorkshire Beekeepers Association, up somewhere around 20 - 25% on 12 months ago.
