    Walk away split

Thanks all, will keep a close eye on next inspection with a view to adding BIAS. I get the 'what would they do in the wild' point of view, and honestly would rather adopt this approach. Given their limited life cycle though, just wondering if they needed a hand to ensure strong start.

    Mating Flights

Does anyone know if Drones offer their services to other colonies virgins? I only ask ask i suspect the new Queens colony is perhaps a little low on Drone count and i know that other nearby more established colonies are aplenty. Thanks

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Discovered that i had trapped the queen in my supers! brood all over the place Grrrrrr spent a good while rearranging supers down into brood (i have brood and half so this was made slightly easier) but still a mess! I have now taken Q excluder off completely. Hopefully they will get things back...

    Very aggressive colony

I have a similar situation with my new colony of black bees. They're doing super well but over the last month they have become increasingly aggressive. My apiary is at the bottom of my garden and it's now almost impossible to go out without getting attacked. Never had this problem with...

    How much for a swarm?

I absolutely agrre that they should not be free, I was perhaps wrongly expecting something nearer to the £50-80 mark though, which i think more reasonable relative to commercial costs.

    How much for a swarm?

I am being asked £140 without box. Swarm I believe was captured earlier this year but just seems high when I could pay the same from proven commercial outlet.

    How much for a swarm?

How much should one expect to pay for a 5xframe swarm nuc from their local association?

nuc, over wintered nuc or over wintered hive

Do not waste what money you have on a full colony, pointless. A nuc will expand fast under decent condition as Chris B has also testified.

nuc, over wintered nuc or over wintered hive

Sorry i should have clarified. With a nuc put into a hive with supers you should under good circumstances expect a crop at end of season. *optimist

nuc, over wintered nuc or over wintered hive

You can wait till next year if you like. But really, if i had a fresh and good Nuc i would expect them under good conditions to expand well and you should absolutely expect to take a some honey this year. All depends on a lot of things though ie weather/ management/ feeding etc...

Pollen - tips on harvesting and purifying

As with the thread title, I'm keen to exploit pollen as best I can after seeing much of it wasting below my open mesh floors. So far I have stared to gather by collecting in a tray laid below the mesh floor. Question is, how do I separated all the unwanted 'bits' and 'debris' from the pollen...

    Bait Hives
