    Bait hive success!

Was in the middle of putting my washing out to dry and a swarm flys over my head straight to my bait hive! My question to you guys and gals is what to do next? I can't leave it there as it's close to the back entrance to the house. I want to move them, do I need to move them 3 miles? Do I...

    Home free?

Hi everyone, hope you don't mind me asking but: Is there a turning point in winter when you could consider the bees home free? Or are there just to many variables to account for so you could never count your chickens...

    Lagos, Algarve farmers market

I made a trip today to the farmers market on the chance of finding some local honey to bring back home. Boy did I find some! There were five different stalls all selling honey, pollen, wax and even frame foundation! I found a stall I liked and bought some orange blossom, eucalyptus and rosemary...

    Attack of the dragonfly!

Last week I noticed a dragonfly darting in between my hives and getting very close to the entrance but then being ambushed by the guards and flying off. He was there for a good 5 mins. Today he's back doing the same, quite a sight might I add! I know dragonflies will eat bees after doing some...

Supersedure cells, royal jelly no larvae!

I have 2 queen cells in the centre of a brood frame, last Sunday there was an egg in one of them. Today after an inspection I notice lots of royal jelly in both but no larvae. Will they fill a play cup with RJ? Will they remove the larvae if they don't need a new queen? I didn't spot the queen...

    Supersedure cell?

I've just inspected one of my hives and found this It's in the middle of the frame. I've gone through the hive twice and I'm positive it's the only one. You can just make out the larvae in the bed of RJ in the pic. The hive is on 9 frames BAS and bees covering all 11, super is on and they...

Can someone please enlighten me? I don't know what tree this is but the bees (maybe mine, they are at the bottom of the garden) seem to be very interested in the buds. Many thanks!

    First solo swarm collection!

Just collected a swarm 2 hours ago, 12ft up on the tip of a branch! Very pleased with myself, I was able to reach a branch with the step ladder to pull it closer, broke the branch they were on and carry them down the ladder into the box! They were about the size of an elongated rugby ball.

    Asian hornets! What next?

Just came across this article in the independent, I had read about them in a book a week ago! The Asian honey bee has a defence against this beast as it evolved along side it but not our European bee! It just seems everything is stacking up against our bees...

    Is this normal?

I've come home this evening, gone down to check the hive and I've found all these lethargic bees (some with pollen) at the entrance. A guard bee keeps coming out and checking the stationary ones. None of them are dead they just don't want to move. I did take some pics on my phone but can't...
