    Amateur beekeepers ‘causing urban swarms’

The problem is not the swarms that are collected but the ones that end up as colonies in inappropriate spaces. Urban bees are unlikely to find a hollow tree its more likely going to be somebodies chimney, loft or wall cavity at which point it’s going to be a difficult and sometimes costly...

Wasps eating through side of poly nuc pics

I have stopped using the internal feeder for this reason and blocked it off. Instead I have added an extra poly eke (the one for converting to 14x12 from national standard), made a crown board from 5mm ply, cut a 5cm hole and added a small rapid feeder. Works a treat and I can still use all...

    British black bees in Wiltshire

I have read with great interest that a Wiltshire beekeeper (Chris Wilkes) is setting up a British black bee breading station at Imber church on the Salisbury Plane (in both the Daily Mail and Sunday Times this weekend). In the Daily Mail article it states the site is 5 mile from the nearest...

    Kingspan in Devon??

Wickes sell a cloned version as mentioned. Since the sheets are big, I buy thinner sheets and then laminate them to the required thinkness with heavy duty double sided tape. I find the 25mm easy to work with (cut and shape) and you can biuld it up to 50, 75, 100mm easily for various appiations...

    Help

I wear a good fitting pair of marigolds with a pair of quality disposable nitrile gloves over the top... Never been stung though this combination [and many have tried...]. I reuse the marigolds but replace the nitriles every time as its only the nitriles that come into contact with the bees...

August Swarm - Unite or over-winter

I got a call from a friend yesterday who had found a large swarm while walking the dog. Grabbed a six frame 14x12 poly nuc and added a frame with drawn comb (and some honey stores) and proceeded to the swarm. Easiest collection ever…. The swarm (about 4 pints in volume) was clinging cold and a...

    OSR Watch

Lots of the fields around me have been ploughed back in and are in the process of being reseeded (with wheat or barley). The fields that have not been re-ploughed are 3-4 inches only and looking very poor. I cut my lawn for the first time yesterday, normally I make the first cut in early...

    Protecting hives from wildlife

It appears to be only the larger green woodpeckers that have a go at hives and it is my understanding they are much happier eating ants (or peanuts!). The problem occurs when the ground is frozen and they cannot get to their favorite food. I have not found any record of the smaller GSW and LSW...

    Protecting hives from wildlife

Watch out for green woodpeckers, for years I encouraged them in my garden by feeding them peanuts, now I have to wrap the hives in bird wire!! Two new chicks this year and clearing the ants out of the lawn nicely, but come january the hives will be their new target!! I have also cast my own...

    Please help save my *#¥@!.......

Try a good car polish first (Autoglym) and if that does not move it Autoglym produce an "Active Insect Remover" or the tar remover. As stated above if you use anything that is primarily not designed for car cleaning try it under the bonnet first, just in case. Cheers, Andy

    Jaspers!

New this year to all this beekeeping lark... There were lots of wasp queens around West Wiltshire in the spring but I've hardly seen a wasp worker all year. Perhaps the change in the weather and a very wet May, June and July has caused them problems. Still once I start picking the plums I'm...
