Needless to say,I am not a skilled scythe user.....

    Tree clearance

Having been involved in three cut-outs from hollow trees using a chainsaw (two of those being the one wielding the saw) I can confirm that chainsaws do not upset the bees any more than one would expect from any dismantling of a hive. In the apiary, the bees were quite fine with lawnmowers and...

    Robert Lee - Uxbridge

Tom: From the web: BOBERT LEE (bee supplies) LIMITED >Beehive Works >High Street, Cowley >Uxbridge, Middlesex UB8 2BB >England Though oddly, the postcode doesn't match the street name. Nick.

    Robert Lee - Uxbridge

I use a "Lee's Of Uxbridge" hive-tool which came with a job-lot of Hive parts etc I picked up in Twickenham about 10 years ago.

Wild bees in gables and construction work about to commence - how do I protect the builders?

Build a "work tent" inside which the builders can work...making sure the bees' entrance is outside the tent,of course.Make the tent extend at least 6' or so away from the gable wall and have a flap of plastic sheet as an entrance to keep nosey scout-bees out. Hope this is a practical suggestion.

    Mobile phone masts

I know that pylons and phone masts are not exactly the same,but.... When we ere looking for an apiary site about 5 years ago,the site which ticked most of the wish-list was directly under a High Tension line (10,000V I think) and perhaps 50yds from the nearest pylon. After some agonising over...

Waste Food Products .... Anaerobic Digester

Almost certainly not. The digesters are sealed tanks filled with slurry which includes bio-degradable waste....methane is drawn off as part of the process and is used to power the plant and and any excess is used to generate electricity (this is in a best-practice plant). What's left is inert...

    Sting response nightmare

From my own experience,it depends very much where on the body I am stung, what the reaction is.On my hands,I get about 24hrs swelling followed by a day's itching.Arms and legs,a small itchy lump the size of a 10p which is gone in a day or two. Once I was stung on the septum of my...

3 of 4 'Bee Quick' and clearer boards

Our experience of Bee Quick (admittedly using it to clear a swarm from a hollow log) was that it made them more grumpy. In the context of your other posts,I'd say be careful about using it if the bees are already in a bad mood.

    Sugar Sugar !

Funnily enough, last winter I discovered (I'm surely not the first) that 1lb of granulated sugar is almost exactly a pint in volume......

    Evening inspections

So long as it's still light, yes. The bees get a bit spooked if you open up after dusk. Actually, many keepers favour Summer evening inspections, but I forget the reasons they gave.

    Extractor restoration project- advice needed

I wouldn't rely on the the metal being "Honey Safe" ie Food Grade as it has been plastic coated, and they wouldn't do that without reason. The metal is probably mild steel (cheap and easy to work) and will rust quickly. The way to procedd would be to remove all the plastic coating, get the cage...

    vicious bees and allergy

I don't want to sound facetious....and I certainly am not intending to BE facetious, though I expect to get flak for suggesting this....but why don't you just leave them alone? Get a transparent crown-board,super them up as-and-when,take the honey off when they are full...you seem to live in a...

    Bee Keeper Survey

Because where I keep my bees is of no-one's concern but my own. I can get advice on disease etc. through my local BKA.

    Bee Keeper Survey

I got one too,but am not on Beebase. I *assume* they got my details through my membership of the local BKA. I filled it in and sent it off,but am,well, intrigued as to how they got my Email address.

    Top bee space supers

My instinct would be,as long as you don't have loads and loads of supers,to convert the supers to bottom space rather than the broods to top. I bought years ago a lot of (frankly antique) hive boxes, including,as it transpired, two top space supers. They were a nuisance as not only were thay...

    using metal in hives

All my (bought,I should add) boxes have metal runners, which seems to be galvanised steel. I'm not saying this is the best/only solution, but my bees have survived this last winter....

    Beekeeping/ pollination service survey

I wish it had been me,Richard.... It was negotiated (pushing at an open door, really) by the former Chairman of the "Friends of..." the park in question, who wanted to keep bees.He knew I was also interested,so one thing led to another. There are now three of us with eight hives. It wouldn't have...
