    BIBBA presentation (BedsBKA)

Ultimately you are correct about how much improvement can be made either by introducing known stock or by culling the worst, however I suspect that most beekeepers are hobbyists and are not doing anything. The queens that they use are the ones they got from their artificial swarm control or...

    BIBBA presentation (BedsBKA)

It seems like there are different interpretations of the same words, which of course leads to confusion. Many Beekeepers would see improvement as culling the worst and making new queens from the best. That is not breeding, but it is an attempt at improving your own stock, whilst accepting the...

    BIBBA presentation (BedsBKA)

During the talk, Kevin stated that he would have been happy starting his bee improvement with local mongrels, but that one of the sponsors and who owned the location wanted Amm. His emphasis was about bee improvement and not on breeding. So the questions about breeding were not really relevant...

    PET jars

Does anyone use PET jars instead of glass? They are lighter and have other benefits when supplying honey by mail order. If so which supplier do you use? Thanks

    Honey jar sizes

The shop that sells my honey shifts 1lb (£7) and 12oz (£5.50) in equal measure. I still get a demand for the 1lb jar, despite the supermarkets not selling that size. Except for the local Polish ones which sell 500g and 1kg. I think that the £7 price point is getting quite high, although my...

    Tradex ''on or off''

Looks like 13 of the exhibitors, out of 48 stands, won’t be there. Still a good turnout in the conditions. I plan to be there.

Local Associations not aligned with BBKA

Thanks for that info. I mistook North Lincs BKA as it meets near Scunthorpe for Scunthorpe BKA. Apologies :sorry:

Local Associations not aligned with BBKA

Thanks for those replies. It seems as if Scunthorpe is part of North Lincs which is part of Lincs BKA, which is affliliated to the BBKA. Furness BKA isn’t affiliated. Thanks for the update on LRBKA.

Local Associations not aligned with BBKA

Sheffield is with the BBKA according to their website. It’s surprising how many associations there are across the country.

Local Associations not aligned with BBKA

I’m interested in making contact with local associations who don’t pay BBKA capitation. I’m aware of Bedfordshire BKA as well as Leicestershire & Rutland BKA. Are there any others? Thanks

    Breeding Groups

B+ I would be interested in the answers to this.

    Advice please

And the hives would be quickly engulfed by new growth of the hedge without constantly chopping it back. And I wonder who might be under the canopy over the fence. Should be fine but might be interesting when they swarm.

Winter varroa treatment for nucs - OAV?

What dose do you give a nuc? Is is the same as for a full size colony?

    Tree Bees

Out of interest what thermal camera did you use? You can get ones to attach to a phone and I’m tempted but am not sure of the quality of the end result (and if the picture would be as clear as the one in your avatar).

Winter varroa treatment for nucs - OAV?

Thanks. I’ll be doing some woodworking very soon then 😀

Winter varroa treatment for nucs - OAV?

I will be treating my hives with oxalic acid vapourisation soon, and am wondering about the best way of treating nucs. I can make a support to go under the nucs so that I can get a vapouriser underneath and sealed all the way round, so that the mist goes up through the bit of open mesh...

Making a Long Hive without plans ...

I made a similar structure using old scaffolding planks to increase the insulation, and put 100mm Celotex in the roof space. The floor had to be added on site as it was all rather heavy!

    New website

I like the look of it and it has an up to date look and feel. I like the beginners course syllabus which makes it clear what someone can expect. Presumably Scottish BKA capitation is much less than BBKA. Couple of comments: The Facebook link on the homepage doesn’t seem to work. There isn’t a...

Charity status for local beekeeping associations

Looks like it has changed, and CIOs could have a lower income. From smallcharities.org.uk If your annual income is likely to be less than £5,000 you are not required or able to register with the Charity Commission unless you would like to become a CIO. Once your income exceeds £5,000 as an...
