    Egg in a play cell

I found a newly laid (i.e. Standing upright) egg in a queen cup/play cell a couple of days ago, but no royal jelly. Despite my extensive (not) beekeeping experience I haven't seen that before. Is that (normally) just the queen laying in an open cell or is it an intended queen? For some reason I...

    Taranov swarm management method

When's the best time to use a Taranov board (other than "before they swarm") - as soon as there are laid-up queen cells, or just charged QCs? Is there any point doing it pre-emptively, or do the bees already need to be making swarming preparations?

    Killer bees on Eden

On Eden channel now - "Killer bees of Africa", fascinating in-hive footage. p.s. ignore the title, it's actually quite good (and nothing to do with africanised "killer" bees).

Anything happening in Norfolk this weekend?

Are there any talks or events (bee ones, that is) on in Norfolk this weekend? I might be in Downham Market with a free hour to fill... I had a look on the WN&KL Beeks' website but couldn't see anything there. Failing that, what's a good shop in or near Downham to get proper local honey in? :sos:

    Register of diseases?

Does anyone know if there's a register of bee diseases which have been recorded in the UK anywhere online? I'm trying to get a list of what's here versus what's not (yet). Thanks,

Giving full supers back to hives

Advice needed please - I've got four supers full of jelly-like heather honey which I've no wayof extracting (eleven collapsed frames from a fifth super proving that no matter how much I warm it I can't spin it out). I've no honey press, can't borrow one and don't have anywhere to set one up...

    Plans for 2013

I plan on: - increasing from four to six hives; - trying my hand at queen rearing, and; - learning & practicing better swarm control. How about you? Plans for the year?

    North Tipperary BKA website

There's a website up now for North Tipperary BKA, northtippbees.com. Details of upcoming association meetings, lectures, courses and any other events will be up on the site, feel free to come along if you're in the area or passing through when we have something on. Cue the distance-themed puns...

    Warming without a cabinet

There's probably an obvious answer that I'm missing (other than "build/buy a warming cabinet" - it's on the list, just not yet...) but is there a handy makshift way of warming honey in buckets ready for bottling? If I can borrow a cabinet I will, but in case I can't... I'm thinking the easiest...

    Sounds like supercedure?

Does this sound like the colony is tring to supercede? One of my hives (which was the Q + 1 frame brood + foragers part of an AS a few months ago) was building up well until recently but stalled at six frames of brood and has since declined in terms of brood to maybe two full frames and a...

    Bait hive etiquette

Okay, now I'm miffed - some *#%t has been setting bait hives near my apiary. Is he well out of order, or is it my own problem if I can't keep my bees from swarming?

    Cleaning & maintaining feeders questions

It's my first season using proper (Ashforth) feeders instead of upturned jamjars, so a couple of quick questions about cleaning & maintaining them - is it sufficient to give the syrup tray a rinse out with cold water when I take them off the hives to avoid any mold etc., and how often (in...

    Apologies in advance

An egg, a larva and a pupa presented their collective scientific research findings to the university board as part of their PhD applications. Their work was rejected as unsound due to experimental BIAS.

    Music to inspect bees by?

The title says it all. Voice of the Beehive is too obvious, Rimsky-korsakov wrote about the wrong kind of bees, how about... The Clash - I fought the swarm? Eurythmics - Bee yourself tonight? Dead Kennedys - Buzzbomb? Anything by Bee-thoven? :music-smiley-026:

    Artificially swarming a double-brood hive

Okay, real insomnia-provoked question here, but how do you AS a double brood hive? Presumably, given the volume of forager-aged bees you'd need a new double brood for them to go into - or not? Would you still just transfer over a single brood frame? If so then you'd need another double brood...

    Apiguard in August

From the "What did you do in the apiary today" thread: An Beachaire (the Irish beekeepers' magazine) reported some recent research that Apiguard proved more effective in tests when applied in August rather than September, as the ambient temperature is higher and not just the winter brood...

What weight of honey in 10 litres?

Anyone know approximately what weight of honey a 10-litre bucket holds (in either lb or kg) please?

DIY polyhives - is there such a thing?

DIY polyhives - is there such a thing? Practically speaking, I mean. With wooden hives I can knock up ekes, roofs, crown boards (even with my limited craft skills & tools) etc. easily enough and save money that way. If I switched to poly - is it as simple as buying sheets of polystyrene and...

    Bee tax

Boring question for the commercial beeks on here - do you treat hives/hive parts as fixed assets (i.e. capitalise them and write the expenses off over a no. of years) for tax purposes or expense them fully in the year of purchase? If capitalised, what period do you write them off over?
