Spinkscompak ..... 1lb honey jar lids

In November I had a problem packing my honey using metal 1lb lids. I contacted Spinks (Leeds) and sent them several unused lids. Since then I have left messages and have not received even a reply to say they have or have not got the lids. I am not happy. I would have expected better service...

    Collected Swarm..... Lost Queen ??

I had a messy swarm collection 6 days ago. After a few days I checked the swarm. Normal behaviour but did not see the Q or any brood. There is a flow on and the bees are foraging but not bringing in pollen. I am hoping to pass the swarm on but am worried that it may be Q-. Any ideas ?

    Legal to kill bees ??

I am on the BBKA Swarm Collectors List. I frequently get calls from the public who have been told by the local council that bees are protected or a pest control firm saying that DEFRA will heavily fine if bees are killed. If bees are in a domestic wall cavity and an occupant is allergic to bee...

    Iron ore processing

As well as beekeeping, I am a member of a local amateur archaeological group. One of our ongoing projects is working on a medieval iron bloomery. We have come across an extensive whitish/grey clayey layer. Does anyone know what this might be ? The local ironores are haematite and siderite. I...

    BBKA Website ....... Problem

I am a swarm collector. I went to the new BBKA site. I wanted to check that my details were correct. I put my postcode in, as though I had a swarm. No result for me or swarm collectors in my area.

    Direct Debit Transfer ...... Moan

I recently opened a Santander 1-2-3 current account. One of the conditions was that the account should have 2 direct debits on it. I arranged for my monthly Council Tax as one. No problem. At the same time I asked Pop Telecom to transfer my direct debit to the Santander account. Only weeks...

    Dealing with wild comb

Dealing with wild comb. I had a problem with sheets of wild comb in a bait hive. I tried the usual method of transferring a sheet into an empty frame with rubber bands but had problems. I posted a help request on www.worldwidebeekeeping.com. One of the members posted a u-tube video of how he...

    BBKA Website and Tree Bumbles

I am on the BBKA Swarm Collectors List. The majority of calls I get turn out to be Tree Bumbles. It would save me a lot of phone time if the BBKA Website were amended to filter out Tree Bumble "nests" and "swarms". A typical first question for me is "Is the swarm high up in a roof, eaves, gutter...

    Ramadan/Muslim Info Please

The month-long Ramadan fast has started. One of my neighbours is a Muslim family. Now that Ramadan has started we have been given a small dish of muslim foods. I think it relates to giving alms to the poor. I think I must have been looking scruffier than usual. I would like to be able to make a...

    Compost Bin ....... Warning

Earlier this year I purchased a 380l square black plastic compost bin via e-bay. I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT. 1. To assemble I had to soak the clips in hot water. 2. The lid can be lifted by a rat. I've got a squatter. 3. Now the bin is full the plastic has started to snap. I'll need to...

    National Beehive Count ..... Hmmmm.

I have received an email from Beebase/NBU asking me to take part in the pilot for this scheme. I gather from the thread "Log into Beebase" that I am not the only one. I am still thinking about this pilot. Any thoughts ?

    Windows 10 ..... Heads up ??

I was speaking to a friendly helpful technical adviser at Plus Net on another matter. Mentioning Windows 10, I was told that some customers had found bugs. I was advised to hold off until these are fixed.

    NBU eLearning

I have received my BeeBase email flyer about the new programme. I have also seen the article in BBKA News. I am not impressed by the NBU putting Exotic Pests as the first section. I would have thought that priority should have been given for conditions that already occur in the UK.

    Honey Colour --- Two Tone

I have collected my annual honey crop. When I have bottled some of my buckets, I have noticed a funny for the first time. In some batches of the jars, the honey has separated into 2 layers. The upper layer is normal honey colour and the lower layer is almost clear. I have not fed the production...

Fixed 11's castellation in a UK National brood box

I have kept bees for several years using Hoffman frames in the National brood box. In 2011 or 2012, there was an article in the Yorkshire BKA Newsletter from a member who used castellations in his brood box. Last year I put an 11 space castellation in one of my brood boxes to give it a try. The...
