    The Queen is dead.....

Cheers guys. I ordered a new queen from Charles at ‘Tiger Hall Bees’ and she has arrived today. I’ll inspect them to see if they have produced an emergency Queen or in fact see if the old one is still alive. Then I’ll make a nuc. The colony is very strong so plenty of nurse bees and suitable larvae.

    The Queen is dead.....

During inspection yesterday I found the Queen dead on the hive floor. She was bred last year, so still young. I’m not sure how she died or infact I somehow managed to kill her whilst looking for her. Anyway, I did spot plenty of larvae in the hive. Will the bees rear a Queen from the larvae in...

    Swarm spotted

Well, after the buzz of collecting the swarm and spending the rest of my day building frames for their new home, I went to collect them in the evening and the box was empty, they had flown off! Gutted to say the least. Oh well, I'm sure there will be plenty more chances

    Swarm spotted

Wasn't sure as it dropped to 3 degrees last night but went today and still there. Managed to get them though and put them in an empty nuc box. Am I best to leave them now until it cools down this evening to grab the stragglers before emptying them into a hive? This is my 1st swarm

    Swarm spotted

I spotted a swarm about 15-20' up in a tree on my way to work this evening. Obviously I didn't have any equipment with me and had to leave them. What I'm wondering is, what are the chances of them still 'beeing' there tomorrow morning. Will they survive the night and will they stay in the same...

    What's going on?

Ok, let me try and explain what's happening in the hive and hopefully somebody can offer some advice. I over wintered a hive with a super of stores beneath the BB, which was on Drone foundation. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago on 1st proper inspection the bees were doing well in the BB, around 7...

    Feeding in Poly Hives

Just looked at that poly carbonate, what a great alternative to the crap crownboard supplied. Insulated too.

    Feeding in Poly Hives

Cheers for the replies. Next on the shopping list is an eke as I don't have any. Once I get one, I'll put the fondant onto of the frames and get some Perspex as a crownboard

    Feeding in Poly Hives

Used a rapid feeder and had no probs in the spring feeding 1:1 but some seem to be drowning now and was constantly picking out dead bees. Plus they weren't really drinking particularly fast. They're not too weak in numbers but didn't collect any stores. They are smashing in the fondant, I've...

    Feeding in Poly Hives

The fondant is wrapped in cling film with a hole cut out the bottom for the bees to get in but after reading somewhere tonight, I might use a Tupperware/plastic tub with hole cut in. I was feeding syrup (sugar and water 2:1) to a weak hive that hadn't collected many stores at all but loads of...

    Feeding in Poly Hives

I have a Paynes poly hive with a clear plastic crown board. I currently have 3 small sticks placed on top of the frames with the plastic crown board on top with a 2 inch hole cut in the top and block of fondant over the hole. Then a super and roof on top. All seems to be working ok at the...

    Food Unwrapped

Yeah, I've since read a couple of interesting studies I found online. A Couple mention mites unable to grip and some say the bees grooming removes them. Seems the best treatment is weekly as it has no effect on mites inside the cells so they must be captures when they emerge.

    Food Unwrapped

Did anyone see Food Unwrapped tonight? They said sprinkling the bees with icing sugar stops the mites from gripping on and fall off the bees. Is this true or a load of BS?

    September swarming?

Could've just got it in one! Haven't reduced the entrance yet and it is next to a hive which doesn't have much stores. Could be little robbers! Cheers for that. I'll stick the reducer on smallest for now. What's the thoughts on feeding whilst treating with Apiguard, any downside or go for it?

    September swarming?

    What does that mean?

    September swarming?

Last weekend I started sorting the bees for winter. Put a super of stores under the brood box and treated with apiguard. Ever since the bees have looked rather confused and there are loads just milling around outside the hive, like hundreds, almost as if they want to swarm but the queen ain't...

    Too late to super?

Got 8 frames of brood so whacked on a super. Forage is pretty good so fingers crossed! Cheers for the advice as always

    Too late to super?

My Q+ hive is almost completely drawn out in the brood box following an AS about 4 weeks ago.. What is my best option, am I too late in adding a super of foundation for honey? Should I add a super with no QX for more brood Or should I be looking to start Varroa treatments shortly?
