    Rape Crop Removal

Went last week to remove my rape crop but found the majority of the frames are still not ripe having done a shake test. The query I now have is how long should I leave the honey for the bees to complete the ripening process? Given the last few days have seen a down turn in the temperature not...

    Observation Hive

About to construct an observation hive using a standard flat pack national brood box. Thought I would simply rout out an internal recess for the glass and then cut through to form the aperture. Intention is then this would provide a side view of all the frames. What I wish to explore is the...

    Double Nuc

Would also split the cover board into two equal parts. Floor would also have to be modified to allow for separate entrances perhaps on the...

Ways of avoiding OSR contaimination--without moving the bees

Have all my hives in a rural location on farm land and suffer from all my crop being contaminated by Oil Seed Rape (OSR). Whilst I accept the early spring crop will be from OSR, is there a method of trying to get a mid summer crop of clear honey? Moving the hives is not an option so open to...

    Filtering Honey

Just taken off my first late summer crop which has been strained through a coarse and fine mesh filter. The resultant honey has still a lot of particulates, presumably pollen in suspension. Should I re-filter using a fine cloth or just leave the honey to settle out? If the advice is to filter...

    Manuka Honey

A friend at work suggested I may wish to produce manuka honey as the price in the shops are very expensive. This got me thinking that he may be right and a quick search revealed you can purchase the plant here in the UK. Has anyone tried to replicate or colonial friends benefits of this plant?

After extracting I have saved the water I used to clean up the surplus honey from the extraction gear. Can this be fed back to the same bees the honey came from?

    Filtering Honey

Having problems filtering my rape seed oil honey through a fine mesh cloth from Th**ns. Warmed the honey for 24hrs at 48C but the honey refuses to run through at an acceptable rate. Do I return the honey to the warming cabinet and perhaps increase the temperature slightly or give up any...

Looking for some advice regarding setting up an group to buy an extractor. Do such groups work and what if any are the pitfalls? The next problem is what to buy. Looking for a unit made in stainless steel and probably hand cranked suitable for National frames.
