Why do some beekeepers hate OSR honey so much?

I eat honey as I spin it and then don't touch any for months. I have cupboards full happily crystallising. As for flavour, chocolatey balsam honey.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

    Bee Houses/Sheds

Bee House Just putting the finishing touches to my beehouse. An 8x6 shed with slots, the tunnels to the hives are electrical conduit connectors. Hives (up to 4) will be held tight with webbing. I have gone for the multi-colour effect on the outside to help the little ones find the right hive...

swarm cells can't find unmarked queen

I have plenty of swarm cells and was going to move the existing queen and some frames, however i can't find her and two of us looked hard... she is there of that i am sure, eggs present etc. Any advice either on finding her or what to do if i can't. Other than that i think eye tests may be needed!

    Nothing in my supers

everything is late this year, plus my bees were bringing in honey until October last year. I think there is a difference between rural and urban conditions. Many flowers haven't flowered yet and balsam is only just starting.

    Queenless hive?

definitely. I had a similar situation and a laying worker. 1 month on i have good sealed brood, eggs and larvae. Bees not so placid but improving. Think my queen was a bit shy!

    Is this a swarm?

Injured queen? I have a smaller cast/swarm on the floor near the hive. It started with a queen attracting a few bees. She appeared to be injured, dragging a leg and her wings looked ineffective, and she appeared to move slightly on one side.. More bees appeared, but only about 30, and i...

    Brood box supplies

I have a standard national brood box with 10 frames. What level of honey supplies should i expect to have (in full frame equivalent) for winter use. Is there a situation where feeding is unnecessary?. My colony seems pretty large despite it having swarmed in late June and bred another queen...

Anyone think Himalayan Balsam is a good idea?

Problem is that it has spread into places difficult to access and is growing on a scale that makes strimming unlikely to curtail its spread. With regard to Darwin and the best suited surviving...it is man who has introduced such species and it threatens the diversity of our ecology. What...

Anyone think Himalayan Balsam is a good idea?

It may be good for a honey harvest now but it is an invasive damaging non-indigenous plant and needs controlling. Bbalsam, on many watercourses in the ribble valley and other parts of the north west is the dominant plant. It needs concerted action to limit the damage it is doing to british...

    Urban dwellers 'should keep bees'

Local authorities are now changing the way they maintain land. Many are seeding parks with wild flowers, leaving verges to naturalise and so-on. In towns gardens can provide a rich source for bees and many high profile gardeners are championing bee friendly gardening. I don't think we should...

    Post swarm advice

Put a frame of eggs/larvae in last thursday, just checked and there must have been a queen and eggs-just couldn't see them. I now have capped brood on the older frames and found the queen (unmarked) So i am still up and running. No queen cells. Bees seem placid enough even when handled by...

    Post swarm advice

On the 29th June my bees were found behind the hive in a bush with another group in a ball on the floor. A friend went away for equipment. On return there were bees in the hive so he took away the cast? and on inspection didn't find a queen. Presumed my queen left with the main swarm. He checked...
