Due to upset neighbours and politics we have a reluctant sale of some kit that all started life at Th----- therefore good quality. Kit consists of; Three traditional white painted WBC hives with colonies One traditional white painted WBC hive - no bees. One National deep brood hive - gabled roof...

To Bee or not to Bee?

To Bee or not to Bee?

Nice idea and may be worth looking at more closely actually, main concern we are open to the public as you may have noticed. The bees are currently in an area not open to the public but of course there is not an area that is not open to the bees! Not sure they would take any notice of signage...

To Bee or not to Bee?

Hi ratcatcher - the site is three acres and the apiary is in the top left corner surrounded by either hedging or open fencing on three sides, the other side is open to the fields and not a house in site. Pic of apiary with only the WBC's in attached, further pics of the grounds can be seen at...

To Bee or not to Bee?

Bad reaction to sting from SWMBO rushed to hospital for treatment kept in for 24 hours! She insists not a problem - duh think it might be - Neighbour came forward and stated she was hospitalised last year as a result of bee sting in garden but wouldn't complain. Regardless of what she says SWMBO...

    Inspection

Thanks Eric, I think that is basically what I have done apart from putting qc's on top, but can soon do that. My concern is that the queen has actually swarmed although the amount of bees would make me think not it is likely as she has not been spotted and is marked. I have requested some...

    Inspection

It gets worse! I have no moved all bees over to a new brood box on stand as per instructions in a copy of Bee Craft - no sign of queen. Currently left with all frames except the one with the capped queen cells in new hive. seems to me this may mean I have now created a queenless colony?

    Inspection

No there seem to be a lot of bees, off back to the apiary now!

    Inspection

just in from inspecting five hives, one appears to have several capped Q cells on one frame. I had assumed that the queen will have gone as they are capped but reading the forum I should go look for the queen and then perform AS if she is there. Is it correct that she could be? If she is not I...

    Pollen from Yew

We have some large Yew trees on the property and I noticed today the clouds of pollen coming from the trees like smoke. Question is does the Yew interest the bees?

    Opened the hive and....

I really don't see what Mr Pea said or did to be ridiculed, all the poor guy said was he lost his colonies last year and this year he is pleased to see they are all alive and well. It would come as no surprise if Mr Pea declined to share his news again.

    Large onions

Not to late to get some more in I think. I have my first seed sown on Boxing Day now up 2" inches and repotted, sown in propagator now in greenhouse. Second batch just put in. If no greenhouse or propagator what about a plastic cloche? Have another go what have you got to lose.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Went to heft the hives but decided not to disturb them on such a fine day, besides which there were lots around and we would have been stung without suits! Watched the bees going into the snowdrops instead, most pleasant.
