    Uniting Apedia & Nuc

Yes, I've got a cut down piece of excluder somewhere but where it is I don't know! I expect I'll find it when I don't need it.

    Uniting Apedia & Nuc

I have just united an apidea with queen to a poly nuc, with newspaper. I used a poly nuc brood box to house the apidea, but have used ekes before. The bees chewed through the paper directly underneath the apidea, so far they have not bothered to remove the rest of the paper.

    Broken glass jars

Sorry wrong choice of words, filled so that no gap shows. Customers will think they have been short changed, and I don't want to sell 10oz jars, I thought I was buying 8oz jars suitable for honey, but the wording on their website actually says suitable for 8oz - 10oz of product, my mistake...

    Broken glass jars

Do you mean I should chuck 62 jars in the recycling bin? Thought I might rinse, and put through the dishwasher, although I feel a bit iffy about doing that.

    Broken glass jars

I have bought honey jars before from beekeeping suppliers, sent through the post, usually Fedex, I must have been unlucky this time, 10 were smashed with broken and powdered glass filling the unbroken jars. Has anybody else had deliveries of jars that had obviously not been carefully handled by...

    What this volunteer shrub?

Apparently most varigated shrubs are unstable and may revert back to the plants orginal parentage, which most likely is Eleagnus umbellata, so not really separate shrubs. Sounds like you have a losing battle now, the green form of Eleagnus will always grow faster!

    What this volunteer shrub?

Might be reversion, it's common with varigated shrubs.

    observation hive

It's a national assembled 5 frame nucleus observation hive. I would say the quality is ok, a good ob hive for the price, I believe the wood is untreated. The locking system didn't let any bees escape! Just to be on the safe side I had taped over the catches so that little fingers couldn't...

    observation hive

Cornwall honey also do a reasonably priced observation hive, I bought and used one last year, had no problems with it.

Late delivery of Mann Lake order

I'm not satisfied with Mann Lake, and won't buy from them again. I don't mind waiting for an order, but I really would expect them to supply runners and the correct size nails. I had read on here about the mistake with the bottom rails, but still they sent out my order with them included. Not...

    this season's yield

I've had a good year, weather window in July was just right for the blackberry, and whatever else the bees forage on at that time of year. Last year was better but not grumbling with what the bees have given me.

    Apidea to Nuc

I paper united an apidea to a 3 frame nuc, paynes poly nuc, and used a couple of ekes to house the apidea. Made a 'crownboard' for the nuc, with a hole cut out the size of the floor of the apidea. Once the queen was laying in the nuc a piece of plastic excluder stops her getting back up into...

    Heatwave

Sweltering here, if my foundation had stayed any longer in the delivery van it would have melted. Had a tricky job getting it into the frames.

    Bee Stings - Bad reactions

"Has anyone else had/heard of similar reactions to bee venom?" Yes, I look like you do when stung on the head, especially anywhere above the eyes. Luckily both my eyes closed, so it looked balanced! I take anti-histamines, a few days later the swelling goes down, that's it.
