    My son wood working exam

Well done to him. I teach woodwork to Autistic adults and it always surprises me that schools don't seem to teach the "old crafts" much these days. It seems to me that the CDT that is taught in school is more invention using any materials except timber. With sustainability in mind I would...

    Early inspection

They have been collecting pollen from crocus flowers over the weekend. Hope the hives are full of brood at the next inspection which I will be doing in a few weeks time - no rush, they have loads of room and plenty of stores so I will leave them to get on with raising lots of new workers for the...

    Early inspection

Willows are just showing buds but are a couple of weeks from blooming. We had a really warm day yesterday so I took frames out and saw queens but there was no brood in any of my 4 hives. As I said I usually inspect in April and there is always brood then. I thought that there would be a little...

    Single national brood box

I think it depends where you live. I had bees in Oxfordshire and then Essex that filled a National brood and a half but here in the Highlands a single National brood usually still has space even though I let them have the run of a brood and a half still for old times sake.

    Early inspection

This is the first time I have been able to open my hives this early in the year. Previous years work and / or weather have prevented it happening until April. All have a queen from last year but non have any brood or eggs. Usually in April things have started to build up but that was 1 month...

    northern bee books

NBB is a small company who seem a bit relaxed about most things. I used to work with someone who did their books (accounts) and she got frustrated about the lack of business sense at times. I have never had any problems with them but.

    Brood pattern

Update Just thought I would update this thread. The queen stopped laying and the colony was dying so a friend gave me frame of eggs. The bees raised a new queen which built up strongly and overwintered well, the increased early and I have now made a nuc to increase my colonies this year.

    Brood pattern

I hope they don't, I hope there are not enough to be thinking about swarming yet, they have loads of space, a second year queen and only 3 frames with brood and even then not full frames. And it's only April in the Highlands, we could stil have 3 weeks of snow yet!!!

    Brood pattern

Thanks folks I feel reassured now. I am sure that they are drone cells 'cos they are bigger and more rounded caps that the workers. As I said I have never looked this early before as normally when I am available the weather is too cool but today was a good day. I will check next time to see if...

    Brood pattern

Hi, I've just looked into the colony for the first time this year and everything seems to be going well. The girls got through winter here in the highlands and still have plenty of stores left. They have been flying well when the temperature has been warm enough. When I looked today I found the...
