    Soft set OSR query

Can any one help please. I have followed the advice to make OSR soft set honey. The problem is that now it is in a jar, lines are appearing on the side as it shows in the picture. Has this happened to anyone else or does anyone know why this is happening. Many thanks.

    Does heat stop queen laying

Would high temperatures stop a queen from laying. We have just checked a hive with this years queen in, who has been laying, but now there are no eggs, or larvae in any stage or any queen cells. The queen was seen. Through no choice, we had to site this hive in full sun, not expecting the...

2 Queens in 1 hive - both DLQ

Some more advice please. I have a hive which, going into winter, I found 2 queens, one being the original, the other a new queen and as it was late in the season, I decided to leave them to it. Inspecting this week, I have found that unfortunately they are both drone layers. As the hive still...

    Should I be patient

Did an inspection yesterday on my 14x12 hive. Plenty of bees, no eggs, no brood, there are stores and pollen and found an unmarked queen (there had been a marked queen last Autumn). I don't know whether this means she is no good or if I should be patient, I am just concerned that all the...

    Hard fondant

I have made some fondant following Rosti's recipe but it has gone rock hard straight away, can anyone tell me what I have done wrong and can it be put right? Also one other query, if the fondant on top of the crown board has gone hard, can the bees still use it. Many thanks.

Urgent Advice Please - 14x12 full of stores

I have completed varroa treatment on Wednesday and have been feeding the hives. I have gone in today to do inspection and have found that my 14x12 frames are full of stores, there is little or no brood and have seen the queen looking for somewhere to lay. My question is should I put a drawn...

    Warming Cabinet Insulation

I have made a warming cabinet and I have lined it out with insulation board, a celotex type with a silver covering. Everything works well but I have noticed that the insulation is giving off a smell when heated, which I am a bit concerned about. Could anyone tell me what they use on their...

    Hivemaker Autumn Thymol Treatment

Hello, have used Hivemakers recipe for the first time this year but used a folded up tissue instead as suggested by Admin. Could you tell me if the bees remove this tissue over time or is it just the fumes that do the job, many thanks.

    Storing Pollen

I have some spare frames of pollen and would like to know if I can store them for use later or is there a way of removing the pollen from the frames. At our local meeting recently, someone said you can store pollen if you cover it in honey but did not say how to get it out of the frame, any...

National Brood Box to 14x12 query.

Here goes, this season, we changed our brood boxes from National Deep to 14x12 by putting new box on top with some brood from the lower box to entice the bees up. This worked well, then over the course of time, we moved the deep brood box on top of 14x12 over QE, while waiting for the remaining...

    Where is the Queen?

On 9th June, during an inspection, I found a few swarm cells that were capped but as eggs were also found, I removed the qc's to give me a couple of days grace to get new equipment. A week later, I had an angry hive, no eggs and I couldn't find the queen either so I put in a test frame of...

    Honey creamer - learner problems.

I bought a honey creamer from eb*y and received it promptly. The product itself is fine but I wanted to make users aware when using it, not to do what I did. When using in a plastic honey bucket, because the blades are very sharp, the first I knew there were tiny slivers of plastic floating to...

    Cast Swarm in Nuc

Collected a cast swarm (from one of my hives) yesterday and housed them in a 5 frame nuc on foundation, I actually picked the virgin queen up and put in the hive. The problem I have is, on looking today the hive is bursting at the seams, so what I need to know is, is it alright to now transfer...

    My swarmed colony

I need some advice please. A week ago one of my colonies swarmed and as I knew where it had come from I treated it like an artificial swarm and rehoused it in a new brood box with full number of frames of foundation and replaced the super on top (this advice from Ted Hooper). The old brood box...
