    Cleaning a Konigin extractor

Indeed - shame it doesn't seem to appear on the cage suppliers drawings though does it, which are very nicely pressed steel, but not finished. Having said that - the rest of the extractor is pretty good. I did notice someone mention hot water above. I personally tend to use cold, so not to...

    Cleaning a Konigin extractor

Blimey - I've been away a long time. Years ago it was Giordan that were the popular extractor. They had the same issue with razor sharp edges on the cage though - which I finally got around to resolving this week when I removed it for the end of season clean - a piece of 240 grit sandpaper...

    Another Friend Gone

I'm exactly the same. I was lucky enough to spend a sunday morning with him many years ago. Thought I was popping in quickly to pick up a queen breeder - but as many on here will attest - he loved to talk bees, and his family. Well after a couple of hours chatting we went to look at the...

    Maybe a rat

Nope - don't think so. One of the pictures shows gnaw marks in line across the entrance gap - which would appear to be too big for a rat

    Forum down time

I took a look having not been on for ages - and you were all gone!! I convinced myself there'd been some sort of rebellion, and the site was down as punishment... (Yes I know my mind work in mysterious ways) I'm glad it's all sorted now. Is there a way to check if the site is down...

    Queen Present no brood

From the OP... Queen is marked, and so present. From the information given, we don't know when she was introduced (Could have been a late summer unite), but it makes no difference to the outcome. She isn't laying now, when she should be. Some action should be taken. Squashing a queen with no...

    Queen Present no brood

What are you trying to achieve? Are you introducing a frame of eggs to see if they raise a queen cell? If you've disposed of the queen - they're almost certain to, so it's not much of a test. If they try to raise a queen, then as PolyHive says - the colony will likely wither and die before the...

    Nuc wanted in Somerset

I have an 8 frame 14x12 colony. The comb wants to be replaced really, as it's a bit old, but if you're interested let me know. It's headed up by last years queen, overwintered in a nuc, but really now outgrowing what they have. They've just filled a super, and I have to do something with them...

What type of suit? Round or hood?

Now I like that idea! I wish I'd thought of it myself. :thanks: Have tried both sorts of suit/jacket - and have ended up with fencing veils in the end, as my head is too big (!) for the round hat ones.

    Solid osr

Unfortunately, you're not the only one :hairpull: I know, I should have known better, but life gets in the way sometimes, and that last two inches in the bottom was left overnight, then overnight turned into two days, which turned into a solid nightmare... I can tell you a really warm shed...

    GBKA Auction Tomorrow

Tell me about it. Madness. £70 for a 'thing' containing "No queen seen, No eggs, Queen cell" yet my 14x12 colony - 10 good seams of bees, BIAS, also fetched £70!!!! They've already produced 2 supers of honey this season. I even put two new frames of foundation in to keep them busy, should the...

    GBKA Auction Tomorrow

Just seen the reports on the bees for sale and the majority are very poor. Mine are the 14x12 full colonies, which have at least got nice comments from the team inspecting them

    GBKA Auction Tomorrow

I shall be there. I have FAR too many bees :hairpull:, and want to allow somebody else the opportunity to harvest their COPIOUS amounts of honey:cool: I didn't manage to get there last year, but it's a terrible place -it has loads of things you didn't know you needed, for (Some) bargain...

    extractors

I KNOW it's a cliche, but do you have a local association? They may let you borrow one for a very small fee. Then you can decide how many colonies you expect to end up with (It may be more than you expected), how many supers of honey you expect to get (It'll be less than you hope), and plan...

Hallo! New keepers - Purton, Gloucestershire

Well, as it happens, I can.... SGBKA - The club apiary is about 8 miles from you. Unless you've already bought out Maisemores we have both national and 14x12 hives, so you can see which you prefer before committing.

Welcome. :welcome: That's a lovely neck of the woods. Have you joined your local BKA yet (Blatant plug ;))

    Advice please

:iagree:Agreed, and it's difficult to assess from a distance, without the history, but three does seem rather a low number for swarming? Regardless, the OP needs to take SOME action assuming it isn't supersedure - or maybe do nothing if it is ? What would you recommend?
  20. Beanwood

    Advice please

If they're genuine supersedure cells, (On the face of the comb, not at the bottom - only three sounds reasonable, not MANY for swarming) they're unlikely to swarm - although if you still have eggs in cells, i.e. HM still present - I'd be looking at some form of AS; One that I vaguely recall...
