    Mare's Tail (Equisetum arvense)

There's a problem with Mare's Tail at my allotment site. Many years ago some genius thought it was pretty and planted some, since then it's spread across the area and this years shoots are coming through on my patch at the mo. I need to get some Curtail sorted but in the meantime I've been...

    Quality Control slipping at Solway?

In late July I ordered 10 commercial frames and foundation from Solway Bee Supplies. When the order arrived I was pleasantly surprised to find the frames and foundation already assembled :) However when I inspected the frames a little more closely I was suddenly far less impressed. In just 10...

Mated drones found in hive? (photo)

Whilst looking for a queen in an AS I was surprised to find a few dead drones that appear to have mated. Is it likely they mated with their sister in the brood box? I don't know if it's relevant but these two drones were almost the same size as workers

    Ban on re-using jam jars

Lots of stories this week about jam makers angry at an EU ruling saying they can't reuse jam jars if they sell their product. Here's one such story: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2214395/Anger-spreads-EU-fines-threat-reusing-old-jam-jars.html Does this also go for beekeepers reusing...

    Common Carder Bees

Hi all, Yesterday I found some bees with bright orange fur have set up a colony in the ground right next to and probably below the pavers my hives are standing on. Am I right in thinking these are Common Carder Bees? Despite the proximity, they're less than a foot from my nuc entrance, these...

    Old Glass Honeybee Feeder

Hi I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this item: I was recently given it by a relative who acquired it in 1970 from a swedish beekeeper who was replacing them with plastic versions. It's apparently a bee feeder. It's about 5" high, made of thick brown glass with a seam running...

    Adams Feeder bowl stuck

OK folks I've been giving my bees some 2:1 sugar syrup to get them ready for the winter. They've been happily drinking it for a couple of weeks but yesterday when I went to check the syrup level I found it had begun to crystalise. The level of wet syrup being low I decided to remove the bowl...

    Crownboard above Bro Adam Feeder?

Hi all, I'm about 6 months into keeping. Having cleared and removed my supers this week I've put Brother Adams type Feeders onto both hives. As an afterthought I popped a crownboard on top of each then replaced the roofs. These crownboards have 2 porter escape boards in each. Today I noticed a...
