    Extracting from foundationless frames

Hi, I meant to post these a while ago. For those of you looking not to use foundation next year this is a frame I extracted from this year. Both sides had some sealed honey on, after uncapping it went into an motor driven extractor along with full frames and survived. I have found that 'wild'...

    Another hive design

I came across this in my travels today, http://www.good.is/post/urban-beehives-get-a-redesign/ The last paragraph reads, 'The design firm Omlet has taken on this challenge in the past, with its plastic "Beehaus," but other innovation is sure to result. The entrance deadline is November 28, and...

I'm thinking of getting a bread maker in the jan sales, can any one recommend any good ones worth looking at or ones to avoid? I looking for something to do a 'standard' loaf, a timer would be good, but not too many whistles and bells. Thanks, Mike.

It would seem to be a bit of a year for swams but can anyone explain why there might be so many queen cells on a frame that does not have any other brood? Thanks. Mike.

Queen Cells, I'll show you Queen cells!!

For reasons too long to go into, I split one of my colonies last week and on the frame with eggs I cut the bottom away leaving 'points' for Queen Cells to be built. While I did not expect a perfect cell on the end of each point I was surprised by what I found yesterday!! Is this normal?

    Scorched earth

I am clearing an allotment site at the moment ready to put some bees there in the spring. Thing is that it has been used for keeping bees before and while I've cleared and burnt the old boxes, there was a lot of old fames on the ground. Is there a way of sterilising the ground or do I just turn...

    Bee Folklore

I was asked at the weekend about how and where do bees fit into folklore? I've read how it is good for the bees to be told the news of the village (not gossiping at all) and about a black ribbon needing to be put on a hive if the beekeepers dies. Any others come to mind?
