    candle making

My mother in law gave us some beeswax candles she had made one year - they dripped like crazy so we never used them again! Is there something that one is supposed to add, to help slow down the dripping?

One for the hands off Brigade :)

Agreed - I never bid until within the final minute; the other reason for that is that I have to decide my maximum and can't change my mind if it's not enough ;)

    piccy of bee emerging

Super shot :) I'm confused though, why is she hatching out in a super - is it being used as extra brood space?

is everybody still doing full inspections at this time of year?

Will be doing a thorough inspection at the weekend when the Head Beekeeper is home ;) For the last 3 or so weeks I've just been checking traffic at the entrance, a quick look through the glass crown board, and putting on the apilife var this week. From hefting the brood box it feels as though...

    OMF and mice

I'm not questioning whether or not to put a mouse-guard on - I always do. The question was about reduced entrance or full width. So I'm guessing the answer then regarding ventilation is yes, it depends on which type of floor. JB

    OMF and mice

I have read that ventilation is important in winter and therefore wasp guard (reduced entrance) should be taken off and replaced with a full width mouseguard. Or does this depend on whether it is on an OMF or solid floor?

    Slight wasp problem

I thought one wasn't supposed to squash them because they then emit something which attracts more (angry) wasps?

    OMF ignoramus question

Thank you! ok was wrong about the feeder bit wrongly deduced from a comment somewhere. Peter S - there is a lot of forum, and I tried a search for OMF before I asked! ;) All hobbies have acronyms and jargon (I work in yacht racing which is one of the worst for it!), I'm not 'up' with the...

    OMF ignoramus question

Ok I keep seeing it in posts and have to ask, what is an 'OMF'? I get that the F is for Feeder (?) but what type? Thanks :)

Q on H&S implications in selling own honey

Give it as presents/sell it to friends and proudly pronounce that it is 'freshly squeezed and complete with bees legs' ;-)

Pensions under attack - action required - Beekeepers unite!

Just as I suspected - at 45 I am still a 'young' beekeeper. Imagine how my husband used to feel when he was a beekeeper aged 18!

    Is this my Queen?

I take my camera every time now (and now with a plastic bag to put my hand in, since I got propolis on it last time!) - never know what there might be to record, either good or not so good... also as my husband who is the 'head beekeeper' lives in Scotland at the moment, so I can send him pics...

I'm envious, yet to see our Queen! On my list of things to do before I'm 50: "Find and mark a queen bee".. I have 5 years ;)

Q re. timing of taking super and starting Apilife

Oh, good!! Thank you. We have never used A.V. before and I've not opened them yet. I will go carefully with the breaking - sounds like it needs to be done over a container to collect the bits ;)

Q re. timing of taking super and starting Apilife

Hello from a new member :) This thread has answered a couple of questions I had, namely how strict the date for applying Apilife Var is, and whether one can feed at the same time (with Fumidil-B in it). The A.V. packet says that food acceptance may be reduced. I got two strips of A.V. (only...
