    Engaging with new BKA members

Just to clarify, I was responding to the original poster who wanted to know why so many people join their local BKA but don't attend many events. I was pointing out that I don't enjoy going to talks. I would think many young beekeepers, who have only recently finished their education, may feel...

    Engaging with new BKA members

I've been along to one meeting organised by my local BKA and that was an apiary visit. All the other events have been talks and, to be honest, I have better things to do with my evenings than go and listen to someone talk about their bees. I can read books or read this forum for that stuff. I...

    No thanks...

You'll see that I have posted very few times despite joining almost 2 years ago. I read stuff on the forum every day and take on board advice which I think may be useful to me. I love seeing the photos people post. Sometimes I consider replying to a post but choose not to - I don't like the...

    Beginners mistakes

Thinking you don't need to put your beesuit on if it's just a quick 'peek' to check food supply. Taking the first response to your question, or waiting until you have so many different bits of advice that you don't know what to do. Assuming advice which is correct for one part of the country...

    Bees in Cornwall

I'm in East Cornwall and my bees are out on cleansing flights and occasionally bringing in pollen. The hives are in the sun though and the bees go back indoors as soon as the sunshine goes.

    Sysonby Knoll BeeCam

It's not different markings, it's the underside of the bee. The hive has a glass wall so some of the bees are walking around on the glass, therefore you see their undersides instead of their backs.

    Moving hive a long distance

I collected a nuc last week - about an hour's drive from home. Collected it at 5pm. As soon as I got it home, I put it in position and opened the entrance disc to queen excluder slots. A few days later, when the weather had warmed up, I moved the disc round so that half the entrance is open...

Will the bees clean out mouldy pollen cells?

I don't do cleaning, hate shopping and rarely nag (if ever).

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Webcam: http://www.amazon.co.uk/COLOUR-CAMERA-AUDIO-VISION-NATURE/dp/B003AANRGQ/ref=tag_stp_s2_edpp_url Hope the link works :)

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I got it for Christmas and hubby set it up: small infra-red camera inside hive, above crownboard. It took a bit of adjustment to get the focus and direction right. A cable links it to our TV so we can watch the bees on the TV. It has been very useful during the last few weeks. This is my first...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Watched bees flying in the sunshine then queuing up to get back into the hive. Also watched them inside the hive via beecam - very busy.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Checked beecam. Bees clustered. Saw enough movement to know they are alive. I sometimes see one or two bees 'flapping' their wings (do bees flap their wings?). Is this to generate heat, move heat around ............?

O.K. So what did Santa bring you ?

I got two small cameras so I can set up webcams inside and outside the hive. (Well, DH can set them up...............I'll just supervise). Will be great to see what's going on inside the hive. I made candles and gave them out as pressies - all very gratefully received. Hope I will have some...

    Baker's Fondant

Thanks for the advice. It is very difficult to know what to do and I appreciate any helpful suggestions :)

    Baker's Fondant

Emailed Booker about fondant - didn't get a reply. Made a batch of fondant using the recipe on this thread - quick and easy. I've only got one hive at the moment so I think I'll just make my own fondant for the time being. Thanks for the recipe, easy to follow instructions and the video :)

    Bees flying and gathering pollen.(Photos)

Mine are still out and about too. Still bringing in pollen - presumably ivy. Good to see as I know they are ok but it doesn't help with knowing what and when to feed, if at all. It's my first beekeeping winter so I've read the books. done the course, researched the forum etc. Expected the...

    Winter bees

I don't know the answer to the question but I noticed today that bees, butterflies and other flying insects were flying around like crazy. They were flying at my head height, kept brushing past my face. I wondered if it had anything to do with the approach of winter and the need to gather...

    Balsam anyone?

I haven't been planting it, just making sure the seeds are dispersed in my garden rather than destroyed by the neighbours, There's common land on one side of my garden and that's full of balsam. Council don't seem at all worried about it.

    Balsam anyone?

Loads here. I might have helped it along a bit last season :) Neighbours aren't too pleased though.

    Pollen feeding

I'm in Cornwall. Picked up my first nuc last week. They have a bag of pollen paste but they aren't really bothering with it at the moment. They were out collecting pollen throughout the weekend and have been out today, dodging the showers.
