    Which wood preservative to use?

Hello I have a flat pack hive ready to build and wonder which preservative/woodstain to use. I have Sadolin advanced one coat woodstain ready to go on. There is nothing on the label to say good or bad for insects/bees. Also I assume its more important what on the inside wood as its next to the...

    Storm kills my bees

Disaster. The gale we had here blew my hive over. I found it this morning strewn accros the orchard. I will learn in future to have it strapped down and a few bricks on the roof. Its been a bad couple of months as I broke my leg and not been out, I determinedly hobbled accros to asses the...

Do you really need a mouseguard if you have an open mesh floor

Do mice try and hibernate in hives with open mesh floors ? Wouldnt have thought so. I do have a mouse guard but have a reduced entrance by using a small piece of wood.

    Haynes Bee Manual = Excellent

Anyone else read this? I really felt it was a fantastic beggineers book, very clear photos, step by step instructions and tips. Everything you could want from a bee manual in my opinion.

    Chalkbrood

I'm halfway treating for varoa and inspected today and noticed quite a bit of chalkbrood. The guy from the local association who sold me api guard said to block the bottom vent with newspaper to make the stink of the apiguard higher so the bees take it out, but I'm wondering is this causing hot...

    Overwintering nuc

I have a nuc I transferred to a hive in early August, the bees are still on the original 5 frames with 6 frames undrawn foundation in the hive. Is it normal to leave the undrawn foundation in the hive overwinter as it fills up the empty space ( would have thought its quite insulating) or do you...

Using frames from a dead nuc

Earlier this year I bought a very weak nuc from a big company that had no queen and no brood and although I tried a new queen it was a drone layer and basically without going into too much detail the nuc recently died out probably as bees were just too old and exhausted also unable to defend...

When to do Autumn feed a newish nuc

I have a nuc that I've had for about 6 weeks and have fed it with the weaker 1:1 solution and need to feed again. When should I change to the stronger Autumn 2:1 feed, I was thinking of the 2:1 maybe in late September early October.

    Warm Way to Cold Way

Hello I have a weak hive and thought about moving them down to a nuc. It will mean going from Warm Way to Cold Way when in the nuc, will this change in orientation affect the bees ? Thanks

    Varroa Board Cleaning

Basic question I suppose but do I need to clean the varroa board under the mesh floor at every inspection to prevent robbing. Ive had robbing problems and waps and tried lots of methods but realised that obvioulsy they will be attracted to the varroa floor if not kept clean.

    How to i.d. Robber Bees

How do you spot them? (I take it they dont have black and white stripped shirts and bags that say SWAG). I read that they have legs pointing backwards as they are unloaded but could these be mistaken for bees taking their first trial flights?

    Robbers and Vicks Vapour Rub

Hello everyone I seem to be having lots of wasp and robber bees plagueing the hive at the moment. I read some tips on the net that include "Some beekeepers reduce the entrance dramatically, preferably with screen wire and spray the alighting board of the victimized hive with a salt solution...
