Dear Beekeepers, yet again i need some advice (i hope i'm not exceeding my quota!) After inspection yesterday I found a few problems that I'm a bit stumped with. My mentor is on holiday, so i turn to you generous folk for advice... I have 2 colonies with problems: (both in Nationals) The...

    cleaning supers + equipment

Well I brought 30k of Protonectar Bee Syrup and some feeders. Both my colonies have good stores of honey and nectar in the brood chamber. Any more honey they store this year in supers ill leave for them ( lot of ivy in my garden) and then I'll top up with feed...

    cleaning supers + equipment

Helpful and informative as usual, thank you. Brilliant idea to put super at the bottom, might try this next time as my clearer board design wont allow me to do as suggested. (i guess i could use crown board in the same way) but yes, for now i leave it on and rub my hands together! - though i...

Thanks so much. Common sense really! - weather is good isn't it! (Sorry, i usually search previous posts for answers before posting a new topic but forgot on this occasion!- have reassured myself regarding some nasty sting reactions by reading archive posts, very helpful resource)

    cleaning supers + equipment

Hello, Following advice, I returned a super to the colony after extracting for the bees to clean. That was Monday. Today I went to put the clear-board on to remove said super once more and I found it full of bees storing honey in it! What now? I guess I leave it on? The hive has a second...

Thank you for the speedy response! I'm assuming the best method for sterilising is to put jars in boiling water for five min?

couple of quick questions regarding bottling

Hi All, i'm just about to bottle my first honey taken off a few days ago! I've had a supers worth in a bottling tank for a few days but it still has a few bubbles in it. The honey was double strained strait into a 30lb bucket and then poured into the bottling tank. Unfortunately, i had to pour...

    After the swarm

Looked today with my expert mentor. We found 3 queen cells, 2 sealed and 1 empty. We only looked through half the brood and my mentor told me to put the lid back on and not to worry, that they would swam a second time. He's incredibly experienced, so I have to trust his judgement, but it seems...

    After the swarm

Oh. Well, best have a peak in there I think! Thanks for the warning. I've got a friend and expert coming on Friday so we'll look then. (already don't know what I'd do with out this forum. )

    After the swarm

Thanks for the warning, but the colony already swarmed, so I thought it unlikely they'd swarm again, no?

    After the swarm

Re Bee trap for my swarm in the old oak. They are bloody high up! Not sure if i got the ...patience, to get up there and build the kit needed. + they're not in a place where they can do much harm, a wild spot where the only people who a likely to get near are the occasional dog walker... I...

    After the swarm

Thanks Hebeegeebee, I found the open queen cell eight days ago, so she must still be sealed. I'm going away for a week starting this Saturday so I think i'll leave alone until i'm back. I've left the entrance at about 50x20 mm. Jimmybee, i'm just gonna check the trap idea out. thanks! Tim

    After the swarm

Thanks RAB, I think i'll open the entrance a wee bit as i don't want the new queen struggling to get back in after the flight. And i'll keep an eye out for the wasps (destroyed 10 wasp nests at the weekend!). I am nervous as i'm away for a week next week. Hopefully the wasps (those still alive)...
