    Drone layer

Thanks to the lovely weather I sat down and looked at the comings and goings on Monday and lo and behold in one hive I saw drones coming and going. February I thinks! Not ruddy likely, so decided to get the hive tool out and have a look as I suspected last year that the colony was doing a very...

2 hives and queens to one?

Further to my queenless hive, I purchased 2 mated queens which arrived last wednesday. Introduced them the same day to the main hive and a split, to hedge me bets. Inspected today as pollen going in to both hives. In the split I found eggs and the new queen doing her thing with perhaps 4...

    Queen gone?

Opened my hive today. Not a single egg and only a few drone brood hatching. The brood frames look as if they have been polished as they are shiny at the bottom but not a single egg, larvae or brood. If she has gone then it was before my last look 3 weeks ago to the day as drone are 24 days to...

    Manuka Honey

Went into the local deli on saturday and they are selling some Manuka honey with labels on it from a beekeeper in Friskney, Lincs. Now I know that the NZ peeps really hate people claiming things that they are not. However, if he is buying manuka honey in bulk and rebottling it with his own...

    Feed rates from different feeders

I use two feeders on my hive. A contact 2.5lt one and a 2ltr entrance one. The difference in feed times are staggering. Even allowing for some robbing the entrance feeder goes in 4 hours whilst the contact one still has syrup in 3 days after filling. I thought they would be closer together than...

    Queen acceptance

Have put the new queen I received this morning into the hive according to Ted Hoopers guide using the Butler cage. As there is virtually no pollen going in at the moment, would the first sign of acceptance be a massive increase in pollen coming in on sat/sun? I really dont want to open that...

    Just checked on new hive

So I picked up my nuc last Tuesday, hived it tuesday afternoon after leaving it a few hours not seeing the queen. Went through on Friday and saw no new eggs and queen cells being made. Told the supplier who are organising a queen for me. Went in today to see what was what. No eggs (no surprise)...
