    Bee lore and customs

Still looking into this 'tanging' and tanging coit/quoit thing. The Old English dictionary gives: Old English to Modern English tang1 [] f (-e/-a) pincers, tongs, forceps [used in sing, and pl] tange [] f (-an/-an) pincers, tongs, forceps [used in sing, and pl] Calc [] m Shoe Modern English...

    So here they are!!!

Ah well, false alarm (again). It's 9:30pm here and just starting to get dark. I noticed them all wandering off and the hive pretty much silent so I took a chance and had a peek. Only a few dozen left on the comb robbing out the honey. Or so it looks. Never mind.

    So here they are!!!

Yes, the board is in place - just no holes cut yet. I hope they are not just robbing out the honey, there is a little tiny bit at the top of one comb (a few square inches) so if they are, they are welcome to it I guess. The entrance is in the super with the feeder (I just put it all in there...

    So here they are!!!

Yes, that's the idea, if I need to feed them (and I probably do at some point over the next few months) then the crown board needs to be finished.

    So here they are!!!

Yes, to be honest, I really didn't expect anything to happen this year so I'm rather unprepared. I guess I'll have to act quickly. The crown board isn't finished (no holes drilled for the vents/feeder) so if they are still in residence tomorrow, I'll get on with settling them in proper.

    So here they are!!!

I don't believe it. If you remember a few weeks back I posted this: http://www.beekeepingforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=11862 but it was not a viable colony, just a few left over so a local beekeeper took the brood to add to one of their hives. By this time I had already bought a new hive and...

    I'm so HAPPY :D

So now you can add another colony to your profile? Sounds like a good year.

How to make a queen introducer from recycled materials

That's excellent and thank you for the photos. Sorry to be such a numbscull but I'm new to this and still learning . . . but why are two holes needed in the side? I understand one will be blocked with candy or suchlike but what about the other?

    Bee lore and customs

Yes, there seem to be a lot of honey associations with marriage. A spoonfull of honey given to the bride (by her mother in law) as she enters her new home which was given in the hope that is added to her fertility and hopefully gave her a 'sweet tongue' instead of being a nag. ;)

    Seriously thinking about beekeeping

Hi Chris I'm another absolute beginner and thoroughly enjoyed the beginners beekeeping course that my local soc offered last year. The practical sessions I missed but I'll be catching up soon. It may be worthwhile giving yourself some time to learn, find the right hives and tools for you...

Found a colony in the garden

Thanks Kazmcc, that's a lovely offer and I am down in Manchester every other week going to a warehouse down there. Our local Beekeepers soc are holding open afternoons (well, numbers are limited) at their apiary so I will be attending some of those too. I could have purchased a nuc, added the...

Found a colony in the garden

Well . . . as expected, what's left of this swarm is not enough to be viable so the middle comb with some brood is going to a local beek so they will stand half a chance and I will start proper next year rather than rushing into things.

Swarm in my garden and I am at work!!

    Any news?

    Bee lore and customs

Great stuff, thanks for all the info. Has anybody ever heard of 'tanging'? or a Tanging Coit/Quoit? I've read about this, something to do with bees but have no idea what it really entailed.
