    Theft in Staffordshire

Hello, I'm the chap that was helicoptered to Hosp from a field near Stone, Staffs, in 2009, I haven't been on here since 9th Sept 2009. I was told before I left the Hosp, "Get rid of them, and don't even go to visit them!" Well, I ignored that advice today, because a very nice lady from Stoke...

Packing up - as of now!

Went to my bee's on Tuesday afternoon, and took a small "ding" on left ear. I've always had severe reactions to stings, but never been stung in head area. An immediate reaction this time, within four minutes, I'd thrown the roof back onto the hive, got out from the tree's, under two fences...

    Slovenian Queens

Does anybody know if there is a supplier of these Queens near to Staffordshire?

    Earwigs, anyone?

My hives and nucs are overrun by Earwigs! I don't think I've ever seen so many, in my life. They are inside roofs, and all the usual places, but there's also a couple of hundred, on top of brood box frames. Do they do any harm inside a hive? John

    Mesh supplier?

Does anyone have a link, or an address of, a supplier of mesh for varroa floors, please? Alternatively, details of what [hole] size to ask for, if my local metalbashing firm is willing to get it, and slice it up for me. They have already done me an 8 X 4 sheet of steel for roofs, sliced into...

    Nucleus storage

I intend to place my two nuc’s in a shed for the Winter, when the time comes; I’ve made them up as an insurance, just in case. I’ve a surfeit of sheds, [two, as it happens]. One is 8 X 6 and stands in the sun, with South facing windows, and the other, 16 X 8, is in the shade of a two story...

    Dead Queen

I've been to carry out my weekly examination of a hive this morning, a bit early, because I'm going to be a bit "tucked up" next week, and I've found the queen laying on the floor of the hive, dead. Not sure when this happened, I last saw her late on Sunday afternoon. I thought the bee's were...

    Suggestions for a screen, please

I have acquired a piece of land – at last - just over an acre! It’s rough, in fact it’s as rough as a Badgers Arris, as they say. It’s mostly covered in brambles, and a plant that I knew as “kek” when I was a kid, I think it’s real name is Cow Parsley, and brambles, and fireweed, and brambles...

    Not a Michael Jackson joke!

A friend of mine went home the other evening, and said to his wife, "I hear that our Window Cleaner has made love to every housewife in this street - except one". "Ah!" Said his wife "It'll be that stuck up cow at number 42!" John

    USB Microscope

I've just been looking at a USB microscope on the net. http://www.firebox.com/product/2161/USB-Microscope They come with either 200 or 400 times magnification. I found my pollen colour charts book last night, [son-in-law had it], and I wondered if this type of 'scope is any good for viewing...

    Saving a super, [I think]

I've been reading of all the people writing up to the forum within the last 3 or 4 days, reference their full supers. Many seem to be praising how they have got supers totalling about two metres high on their hives, but honey about eight metres high, so I decided to have a look at mine this...

    Nuc expansion?

I'd like to start off a nuc, or two, to give me a good start to the season next year, but please be patient whilst I ask a couple of questions. Firstly, what stops it from expanding so quickly that it swarms? Secondly, what would be the latest dates that I should start them off, consistent...

    Getting rid of the attendants.

Last Friday, I picked up a queen from Mike in Brockworth. She was supplied in a nice little flat plastic cage, together with eight attendants. There were two exit gates in the cage, one worker sized, and the other was queen sized, both sealed with candy. "Green number 49" is now in a nucleus...

    Painting a poly.

What do forum members use to "paint" a Poly Hive? I've read that latex paint can be used, or even that old standby, Cuprinol. I wondered what others use, I gather that it's not so much a case of waterproofing, but more a matter of preventing deterioration from UV rays. John

    Artificial Swarm question.

If a colony is divided, to make an artificial swarm, but before the queenless section can go very far down the queen making route, say after 24/48 hours, a queen is introduced, [via an introduction cage], will they accept her, in theory, at least, and abandon their attempts? John

Some advice, and practical help, please.

Got my bees from Mike at EasyBee on 19th May. They have featured on here since then, when I was advised by PH to replace the frame feeder with the eleventh frame, and ensure that frames were arranged with an equal number at each end. PH said that the penultimate set of frames would be drawn...

    A surplus of drones?

I recently discovered a small fish and chip shop in a back street in Dresden, [yes - there's a Dresden in Britain, and I was lost that night!] Went in this evening, to find that the couple that run the place, have a copy of Ted Hoopers' "Guide to......" at the back of the counter. We naturally...

    Bees and the eleventh frame.

Have just been to look at the bees I collected from Mike in Gloucester yesterday. They are on ten frames, plus a feeder board; I only went there today, to see if the frames had moved much during the journey, I couldn't do it yesterday, they had travelled 85 miles in the "Kangoo", been bumped...

    Wholesale/retail

Firstly, does anybody know when is honey is classed as wholesale, and secondly, does it come under the same regulations as when it's sold as retail? John

    Using broods as supers?

Here goes, daft question number 17 million and something.... First, some background. As my beeking experience is limited to a season or so, about 12 years ago, I realistically will have to declare myself a beginner. I've retained some practical knowledge from then, though. However, I cannot...
