When the bees are left for winter should the holes in the crown board for the porter bee escape be blocked up or left open? I read the article in the BBKA news and was not sure what to do as it said to take the porter bee escapes out - I can't remember what we did last winter at all!

I have a few super frames that were left for too long and after extraction they have some crystallised honey remaining in the cells. The bees have shown no interest in cleaning them out! Please can any of you more experienced folks advise me on how best to deal with them. Many thanks
