whats the story with getting an invention patented?

Even if you have patented something if somebody else breaks your patent you will have to sue them, probably in the Chinese courts. The cost of a lawsuit against possibly a large manufacturing company will break you, not the cost of getting the patent!

Pensions under attack - action required - Beekeepers unite!

Why is it that so few people understand that no matter what the reason, whether it was Gordon Brown, Tony Blair, the Banks, the BBKA or whoever the country doesn't have enough cash to overpay benefits or pensions. Public sector pensions were always over the top and need cutting, ordinary...

How to get propolis off stainless steel

Hmm, I find the most effective is washing soda and scrubber followed by a liberal application of flowers on SWMBO.

    Dowsing

Dowsing is based on the ideomotor effect. Here is a definition of it from James Randi: ideomotor effect This is the psychological phenomenon that underlies dowsing, automatic writing, table tipping, and the Ouija board. Quite unconsciously, the participant is moving the hand enough to make the...

Too many bees in the hive.(photo)

The trick is to make sure the space available in the brood area is chock full of honey, if so there is no harm in having more above in another super, but bear in mind that they have to keep the hive warm, and there is no point in allowing them to have and heat larger spaces/stores than they...

Feedback after reading John Harding's book?

It must have looked fantastic when the supers were on those stone broods. Incidentally in relation to the ley line and dowsing rubbish, there is a prize of $1,000,000 on offer by the James Randi Foundation for anyone who can demonstrate that he can dowse. There is a pipe underground, and the...

Lets go for a drink girls.

You can give them oceans of fresh clean water, but they won't touch it whilst they have a good kitchen drain or some chicken poo around:-)

    Apiary Layout Design

Um - I think the expression "see black" is a bit misleading. Bees have a very low sensitivity to red light, much lower than us. There's a rather rough graphic here - http://fieldguidetohummingbirds.wordpress.com/2008/11/11/do-we-see-what-bees-see/ Maybe a number in uv paint at 430nm on a...

    hornets nest

There are different types of hornet. The UK one predates beehives a bit. One Asian one has a tactic of attacking a bee colony in a major battle until all the bees are dead and then stripping it out. This was shown on a TV documentary this year, but I haven't heard that this is the same as the...

    Apiary Layout Design

I have two points here. When you write an email or post, if it has strong words, or is a robust response, then let it lie fallow for an hour, or overnight, and re-read it, and what you are responding to. Simple text doesn't always well convey the meaning and attitude of the writer, and you will...

Calling all Beekeepers in the Tanar Valley !!

In my painful experience getting any sort of co-operation from Tamar Valley makes herding cats seem a doddle. When we proposed a new apiary we were informed that there were too many beehives in the Tamar Valley and it could not support any more! Form a new organisation... Steve

Feedback after reading John Harding's book?

Here at Angmering we are well South of the potent Michael Line as it runs from Lands End to Essex, and just West of the ley line from Stump Cross to Beachy Head. However I have come across an amazing photograph illustrating the Lunar influence of ley lines and standing stones...

How do I remove a Colony from a Tree ?

I know a few feral colonies that do jolly well and show no signs of dying out through varroa. I'm sure some do, and maybe swarms come in after they have died and look as though they have been there all the time. Steve

    3 miles 3 week rule

I'd agree with that. If you are moving a hive across an open lawn its oviously easier for the bees to spot it and think they've made a navigational error, than if it's amongst bushes and other similar looking hives. Steve

    3 miles 3 week rule

The rule I heard was 3 miles or three feet. First I think 3 weeks is not necessary. Pretty much the whole population of flying bees dies and is replaced in 4 weeks. Whenever you move a hive within four weeks there will always be some bees that have never known elsewhere and some that did know...
