    Aggggggggggggh!!!!

Get your money back, expect you wont be the first to receive a refund. Luckily I got wind of the issue before I ordered mine and found an alternative supplier (which didn't get them from Thorne) and were good.

    What's this?

Did an inspection yesterday, havn't seen this before. I pulled these bits out of cells...in amongst what looked like normal healthy brood. My first thought was perhaps this is chalk brood? The two bits to the right look like dried up larvae, the one of the right looks like it's made it in to...

    alergic?

Careful you dont have an infected sting....if the red swollen area steadily spreads increases in size - say over the course 1day, 2days, 3day - get to the docs ASAP. They will prescribe antibiotics. This has happened to me twice now. With my last one I got stung on the finger - my finger...

    white milky stuff...

Update....just occurred to me that I never posted an update so here it is. On second look about 1-2 weeks later it would seem to be crystallizing honey - and the fact that they seemed to have loads and loads of stores may have been down to the fact that some stores had already crystallized and...

    white milky stuff...

Not sure what Susbees avatar looks like, but if it's the lava floating in royal jelly pic then I'd have to say no it looks different - the liquid milky stuff doesn't have a consistent texture. This my third season beekeeping and I've not seen anything like it yet. Imagine if you had clear...

    white milky stuff...

I may need to have another look...but I doubt this. I'd have spotted the lavae I'm sure (i think, now you make me doubt myself). The bees were quite grumpy suggesting not right- possible queenless.

    white milky stuff...

Hi, Did an inspection yesterday - top brood box of a Snelgrove artificial swarm - which on last inspection (about 2 weeks ago) appeared to have a newly mated and laying queen and eggs, however checked again yesterday no sign of eggs or brood. It did have lots of capped honey stores and pollen...

    Granulation labels

Right so honey that has a higher proportion of fructose to glucose is of a lesser quality to a honey that granulates more readily ;) Or at least if you took that label as gospel you'd conclude as such.

    Granulation labels

:iagree: - but I think the label perhaps needs to explain why - most of my customers wont have a clue. However, grammatical errors aside and just playing devils advocate for minute - perhaps honey that does not granulate is better quality?

    Labelling...spot the errors...

As far I know you don't need a Lot number if you have a best before date.

    Granulation labels

Hi, Just thinking about labels and seen some Granulation labels for sale - you will have probably come across them before. I'd like to know why on the label it states: "All pure honey will granulate, in fact this is the best proof of it's quality" I'm not sure this is such a great statement...

How long is a honey bees stinger?

How long is a honey bee's stinger? Interested primarily in knowing how far they can insert the said stinger, given a nice soft bit of flesh  Anyone have any scientifically researched figures? Thanks.

    what's in your toolbox?

As the subject says... What's in your beekeeping toolbox? I'm getting organised this year and want to heave a dedicated toolbox for inspections. Cheers Matt

2 nucs in one brood box?

Hi, I'm putting together a swarm control plan for this season. I've got 4 hives now. I'm thinking about doing traditional artificial swarm control, but take 3-4 frames of brood + 1 queen cell into a nuc box - which will be situated a few meters from the original hive. To save on equipment I...

    Cloudy honey

I have to say, it feels very much like bee keepers have been backing themselves into a corner here. Think how other food producers like farmers have a job selling perfectly good produce that is not deemed to be the right size/colour/shape. E.g. take any fruit or veg. There does seem to be...

    Cut Comb Box/Packaging

I've just being trying to buy some containers - phoned Thornes and was informed they have removed them from sale as they've had too many problems - ill-fitting lids and small pin-holes. Which confirms what others have said in this thread. I then phoned a few other places - to try to buy some...

    Refractometer Calibration

I have to say that the idea of using a random olive oil to calibrate a scientific instrument seems pretty flawed. I doubt very much that you can trust wikipedia to be 100% correct and account for differing environmental factors. So the moisture content of the olive you choose could be very...
