    Extractor screens

I've got a 9 frame radial extractor, but have a few deep frames to extract. Thornes have the tangential screens but they are £90 :eek. I have read that someone made screens using cake cooling racks. Has anyone got any advice or plans they could share. Thanks. :D

    Swarm control

My swarm control this year didn't exactly go as planned so I'm looking at other methods. I have limited space in my garden so I'm looking at vertical artificial swarm techniques. What are the pros and cons of the Snelgrove or Horsley boards?

    Workers moving eggs?

My father-in-law has hurt his back so asked me to take a look at this bees. He hadn't inspected for two weeks and the day before I inspected them they swarmed. What I found was the marked queen above the excluder and no brood in the brood and a half below although there were a few hatched...

    Tortoise Advice

I know beekeepers are a diverse lot so I'm looking for advice on keeping a tortoise, any hints or tips, advice on what books to read etc would be greatfully received. I'm looking to get either a marginated or a hermann. Thanks

    Changing hive size

This is my second year and I quickly found out that single national brood box wasn't anywhere near big enough for my buckfast queens so I have moved them on to double brood thinking this would be advantageous as I could move the frames around between. This would be possible if I could lift the...

    Alfred's Tower

I visited Alfred's tower today, first thing I noticed when I got to the top was not the pain in my calves or that I could see practicaly the whole world from up there, but there were numerous honey bees flying around. I followed them and found they were going into a crack in the mortar. I'd...

    Laying worker

I'm pretty sure I've got a laying worker or poss drone laying queen, but can't find her. Could I unite this hive with a nice strong colony? Would the LW stop laying and revert to being a good little bee? Would the good queen kill the DLQ or vice versa? I don't really want to risk my good...

    Refractometers

I'm looking for some advise on buying a refractometer, I have read on the forum that the ones for around £18 in E8ay are reasonable quality for the money, but what I need to know is which one is it I need for checking honey. Would I need the 58~90% or the 0~32% version? Thanks. not worthy

    Caught my first swarm today!!!

Unfortunately I think it was from my inept attempt at an A/S. :dupe: The neighbour knocked on the door and said "Do you keep bees? I think we've got a load of them in our garden. I'm allergic to bees" About a rugby ball size cluster of very calm bees under neighbours hedge, about an inch...

    Queen Marking

When I opened my bee keeping kit box yesterday I found that the top had snapped off my marking paint. After mopping it up and cleaning my kit I realised that I'm going to need more just in case I ever manage to spot my elusive queens. I'm not really bothered about having the correct colour for...

    Buckfast Queen

I have a one year old Buckfast queen in my Garden hive. Upon inspection today I found numerous queen cells so have started an AS. Now, I've heard that second generation Buckfasts can be rather feisty and my current queen is laying very well. My question is should I replace my queen and...

    Solar wax melter

My OH was kind enough to make me a solar wax melter, shame the weather has changed now. It's mainly made of scrap, I just need to locate some insulation to pop inside. The cover is made from an old plastic panel from a greenhouse, I'd rather have had glass, but this is what we had handy and on...

    OSR Pollen?

I walked past my garden hive today and out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw wasps on the landing board, looking again there were loads of bees with copious amounts of bright yellow pollen. I've looked on the pollen charts on line, but there is nothing flowering in spring that's anywhere...

    Double Brood??

I've had my bees for a year now, I didn't get any honey this year, but I did increase my one colony to 3. I don't want to make any more increases and assuming they all make it through winter (fingers crossed) would it be best to stick with single, increase to brood and a half or double brood...
