    Winter wraps for woodpecker protection

I use damp-proof course material to wrap my hives. I bought a roll from a builders merchants .. 450mm x 30m for about £13 .. and that's what I think is used in the link by Amari. I staple a couple of strips of sponge to each corner of a hive and wrap around them so there is a gap between the...

    Over-wintering an empty hive

How about freezing the frames one or two at a time. They only need a few days so all done in a couple of weeks or so.

    Pollen Question

Thanks everyone. It seemed like such a good idea but I should have known that the bees ignore it for good reason.

    Pollen Question

Thanks Finman. That's a shame because I have collected a bunch of it 'in case' .. but now I understand see why they seem to ignore it.

    Pollen Question

We have a cedar tree in our garden and at this time of the year it is covered in catkins that release loads of yellow pollen. The tree is clearly wind pollinated and I haven't noticed bees taking any interest in it. But do you think they would they be interested in the pollen if I used it as...

    Oxalic sublimation for Autumn Treatment

Good point about drones; not an issue at the year end but could be an issue at other times. 0, 5, 10 & 15 it is then.

    Oxalic sublimation for Autumn Treatment

I'm confused by this. I read that worker cells are capped for between 10 & 12 days .. so doesn't the treatment need to extend beyond this period (12+ days) to catch the mite that is capped just before the first treatment? I assume that treating every 5 days is timed to catch mites in the...

    Hive wrap

I wrapped a hive last winter using wide damp proof (DPC) material and I fixed strips of sponge to the DPC to align with the corners of the hive to keep the DPC tight and away from the hive surface. DPC isn't insulation material as such but I suspect that just keeping the weather off the outside...

    Thymol Varroa Treatment.

Thymol stock solution problem I made up a thymol stock solution to Hivemakers recipe a couple of weeks ago and I've been using it in sugar syrup. I went to use it today and it has developed a hard layer on the surface. Should I warm it to dissolve the layer, start again or something else...

Woodpecker protection what size chicken wire?

I think that fruit cages use a 19mm net to keep the birds out. I use a 19mm mesh to protect my girls from woodpecker and they navigate it without too much trouble.
